Description for Alfa Romeo 164 1991

We are selling a 1991 Alfa Romeo 164S (Sport). This is a project car looking for a good home.

We purchased the car in the beginning of the summer as a non-running project car. It sat for several years before we towed it home. We brought it back to life and it now runs well.. The 3 liter 'Busso' V6 engines runs very well and makes an incredible sound (Many say the Alfa 12v 3.0 is on of the best sounding engines of all time). The car drives okay, though I would not use it as a daily driver or trust it for a long trip. Mileage is somewhere around 200k, the odometer does not turn and the previous owner reported that it has not for awhile.

We replaced the battery, changed oil/filter, and flushed the cooling system.

We installed new ball-joints, new sway bar end-links and bushings, and new tie-rod ends.

We replaced the driver side front wheel bearing and spindle.

We replaced the passenger side control arm which updated both well-worn bushings.

We replaced the Halogen head-light bulbs.

The Sport came equipped with a computer controlled electronic suspension. Overall, the suspension is in good shape, but the rear electronic struts are soft and bouncy. They may be worn, or the electronics may be fussy (or both). They would need either an over haul or a flat-out replacement with conventional struts.

The previous owner rebuilt the transmission. Clutch and shifting work well.

Radiator was recently replaced with a larger aluminum one. The thermostat appears to need replacing as the car runs cold when driving. Cooling fan now works after correcting the wiring.

Tires are decent on original Alfa wheels.
The paint is faded and the clear coat is peeling (or has peeled). Overall, the body is in good shape with several unfortunate dents in the hood and trunk.
Overall, it has been a fun and rewarding project. If I had the space, I’d keep it. I like it. We are selling it because my son is back in college, and I’d like to put my car back into the garage.
