Description for Alfa Romeo Spider 1985
I have owned this car since 2004. I purchased it from the original owner. He and his ex had bought it new in 1985, drove it for 20,000 miles and then broke up. She kept the car stored for many years until her new husband told her top sell it or give it back to her ex. He wanted it back but after a short time decided he didn't want the memories either and sold it to me. It's paint had faded and it needed brakes and the all the other things a car that had been sitting around needed, and it got all that work and more back in 2004. Other than the new paint the car can be classified as a "survivor". It has not really been restored, simply maintained using original parts wherever possible. The carpet is good, the leather seats are like new, the factory A/C blows cold. The head was rebuilt about 10,000 miles ago to update the stem seals. The originals were prone to leaking and causing the car to smoke on start up, these wont do that and the car does not smoke or use oil.I did do a few upgrades. The exhaust is the European Alfa twin pipe system, it has adjustable KONI shocks and a larger front sway bar. I put on 16" Panasport wheels but I have the original wheels available at extra cost if you want them, or I would keep the Panasports and give you the stockers.
This car has never been rusty, its very solid all over and drives great.
I think these mid 80's Alfas are the perfect blend. The have the classic looks and flavor of the old vintage car experience, but new enough to have electronic fuel injection, air conditioning, and power windows. 1985 was the last year of the old twin pod gauge arrangement.
I am selling it because I have a collection that contains a ton of 2 seater 70-80's sports cars and the Alfa just doesn't get driven enough to justify its spot in the shop.
I always try to be accurate in my eBay auctions and this car is over 30 years old so there are a few minor issues the new owner will need to sort out. First, the car has a slight pull to the left when braking, I believe that it is a bad tie rod end or ball joint but I have not taken the time to investigate. These parts are cheap and available. If you want me to fix it after you buy it we can talk about that. The top is brand new and does not leak in normal conditions. However I drove the car back from Miami to Atlanta yesterday and went through a pretty hard rain shower going about 75 mph and got a few drips on my leg. Its probably an adjustment on the top, or just don't drive like me in the rain! Second, these cars all have an issue with the 2nd gear synchro ring in the transmission. This is not a major issue, it just causes a slight grind when shifting into second gear. It can easily be driven around buy double clutching when doing your second gear downshift. If you don't know what that is, perhaps you should be looking at a V6 Mustang Automatic Convertible?:)
All in all this is an appreciatingclassic you can drive everyday, its beautiful to look at and really fun to drive. I've had lots of cars from this era and these cars stand far above the MG's, Triumphs and FIATs of that era.
My Alfa Specialist in Miami who has serviced it for me since I've owned it thinks its worth $15k. I just drove it from Miami to Atlanta yesterday and it was a great trip with no issues. I put the last 22,000 miles on it myself and I would drive it anywhere right now.
