A LANDMARK MODEL IN POSTWAR ALFA SPORTS CARS
The Alfa Romeo 1900, introduced in 1950, was the brand's first-postwar production model, previewing the direction the Milan based automaker would take over the coming decades. It was an important car for Alfa Romeo as it was the marque's first to be built entirely on a production line and the first with unibody construction. From 1950 to 1959, there were multiple variations of the 1900, with the most obvious differences in their various window configurations. The coachwork for most models was produced by Touring, Pinin Farina and Alfa themselves. Coachwork for several one-off and limited production variants was also built by Bertone, Ghia and Zagato. Total production for this particular example was about 480. This 1954 model designated a 1900C Super Sprint Touring Superleggera Series 2 coupe meaning the 'C' is for Corto (short chassis); the SS is for Super Sprint and 'Superleggera' is coachbuilder Touring's designation for lightweight (all aluminum) coachwork. The Series 2 Super Sprints had more horsepower and dual carbs not found on the Series 1 cars. Promoted by Alfa Romeo as "the family car that wins races,"it features Borrani alloy wire wheels and a 1900cc, 4 cylinder, DOHC, alloy engine, with two Solex carburetors. Among numerous other Concours awards, this car has received the 'Certificato d'Oro' from the Alfa Romeo Owners Club of America for achieving over 99/100 points in their annual National Concours, twice, ten years apart.
