1973 American Motors Javelin AMX 5.9L with 3-speed Manual

The first 7 digits of the VIN say this is a true Javelin AMX with a 3-speed on the floor and a 304 V8. I believe the car to have all original mechanics. interior. and dash aside from an engine transplant -- It now has a strong running 2V 360 that's dated to 1973. The swap was done by a previous owner. I have a clean Washington title in my name. Okay. so why am I selling? I was hoping to take some time and start fixing up the miscellaneous maintenance it needs as I drive it around. However. I just landed an awesome job in Chile that I am leaving for in 2015. so I figured I should be proactive in trying to get the AMX sold simply because I don't want it to sit around until I am back to the states much later in the year. I am a firm believer in transparency and honesty in all sales. especially cars. so I will be as descriptive as I can to highlight the good and the bad so that you have a full picture of what you're getting into. Paint -- The car had been partly disassembled for the paint job. The engine bay has matching blue paint. and overall. I would say it was an amateur paint job. All of the paint has sealed well. don't be mistaken. it's just that I would call it more of a "10-footer" rather than a 2-footer. There are a few blotches and color bleeding between the white/blue and I've take a few photos to illustrate what I mean. The colors look good and it goes well with the interior. I don't know if the paint job matches what the car was built with. Body -- There is no rust on this car that I can find. and I have scrutinized it. It has definitely had a few dents and bumps that were once pulled out and filled. It's a mostly-straight car -- Both doors sag slightly and the hood slightly favors a right-to lean. Other than that. I think someone in the past cleaned up all the metal and did a total once-over on it. so I would say one of this car's strong-suits is the condition of it's shell. Very solid everything. Wheels + Tires -- There are American doughnuts on all corners. There are brand new (as in 10 miles) Performance GT tires all around. They're nice tires from Les Schwab and they carry a warranty with them! The chrome on some of the doughnuts has peeled off slightly. Brakes -- Disc up front. drum in the rear. Power brakes work well and the car has solid stopping power. Suspension -- I don't know much about what has been done here. It looks like the rear shocks were replaced not that long ago. The car steers / drives / brakes completely straight. Steering -- The wheel is original. The power steering system works well and is what makes this car fun to drive. I think the steering is a lot tighter than many other muscle cars and the power steering feels smooth. Engine -- Like I said. this AMX came equipped with a 304. but It's been replaced with a '73 two-barrel 360. Supposedly it has been rebuilt. and I believe it -- It runs extremely strong. starts every time. stays within safe temperature even when driving in 100-degree weather. doesn't burn or leak any oil. I think it was rebuilt to original spec. but I can't say for sure. It makes some good power and has a nice weight to it. From the specs I will relay an educated guess of about 200 horsepower and a few foot-pounds shy of 300. Transmission -- The car came equipped with a 3-speed and it looks original. The linkage is sticky from 1-st to 2'nd on occasion -- it seems random and not linked to anything else. Otherwise. it shifts well. There is only one leak on the entire car from what I can tell. and it's coming from a seal in the transmission. It drips 3-4 drops per month. I would address the transmission sooner than later but it would not deter me from driving it anywhere as it is now. The odometer says 15. xx and I'm sure its rolled over at least once. making 115k. There is no limited slip diff. Interior -- Is original from what I can tell. except for a carpet replacement. The radio is gone. I have no idea if the speakers work or not. The heater does not work. The seats have some stains on them and a few places need to be re-upholstered. I think the seats could be cleaned well by a professional. The passenger seat sags to the left. probably needs new springs in the seat. The speedometer. temperature gauge. dome light. back-lights of the dash. headlights. high beams. brake lights. wipers. and blinkers all work. Sometimes the blinker relay is slow. The oil pressure gauge. alternator gauge. fuel gauge. tachometer. and clock do not work. The transmission shift stick does not have a permanent cover on it. The rear deck behind the rear seats is trash and needs to be replaced. There is no weather stripping on the trunk. so it rattles when you drive on gravel. I just had the alternator rebuilt in addition to buying a spare alternator. The spare alternator works. but does not quite line up with the v-belt pulley from the engine. So. while it will come with the sale of the car. the spare alternator should be used in emergencies only. as it is liable to wear out the v-belt quickly if you use it (though it works well and charges the system perfectly). I just replaced the radiator with a brand-new aluminum radiator and replaced several coolant hoses around the engine bay. It has a fresh oil change within 2 months and 100 miles. The sale of the car will also come with brand new replacement v-belts. I hope this was a thorough description of the car. Please don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have. It's definitely a solid car and would be an easy restoration project. It has current tabs until July 2015 and is ready to drive right into your garage even if you live hundreds of miles away! Just for your reference -- I washed the car immediately prior to taking the pictures you see here.
