Description for AMC Javelin 1970

1970 AMC Javelin Mark Donohue Signature Edition
In the late 60's, as the "Pony Car Wars" raged on the tracks of the Trans Am racing series across America, AMC enticed the most successful team of the '68 season, Roger Penske and Mark Donohue to campaign the AMC factory team cars during the 1970 - 1972 seasons. AMC also needed to homologate (or legalize) the new AMC Javelin's special features for the 1970 season. SCCA rules mandated that at least 2500 units be built to production standards to support the new twin inlet ("ram air") hood scoop. The main objective was to legalize the use of the very special Mark Donohue designed rear deck spoiler.
All production Mark Donohue Signature Edition Javelins were based upon the fully optioned SST models and featured the distinctive and functional "ram air" hood and rear spoiler. In addition, the console floor shift was standard along with a fully trimmed deluxe bucket seat interior. A 360 engine was the standard configuration, with thicker webbing in the four bolt main capacity engine block. AMC did not specifically denote or identify Mark Donohue Signature Edition Javelins in VIN, door tag, or body tag numbers. It is believed that AMC produced 2501 of these Mark Donohue Signature Edition Javelins.

This car has previously been owned by the owner of Year One and Goodmark industries, as well as fellow enthusiast Drew Alcazar of Russo and Steele Collector car auctions. The car currently shows justunder 10,800 miles on the odometer, representing what is believed to be110,650 miles. We purchased the car witha prior owner purporting that the odometer reading is believed to be accurate.
A prestigious collector and highly respected AMC restorer and enthusiast completed this car to an outstanding level of cosmetic and mechanical restoration that is both highly show and road worthy, and since that time she has been meticulously maintained.
During her restoration, the 360 "wide web" unmarked factory engine was fully rebuilt to stock configuration except for a Competition 268 H camshaft and valve train with complete "K" kit resulting in an incredibly high torque curve from 2200-5000 rpm range. It has the correct 391 C "dogleg" heads, offering superior dogleg exhaust port and studded rocker arm mounts. Her engine sounds wonderfully throaty and mean, and has a tremendous amount of power.
These were original equipment and will outflow almost all other small block heads. The design is a product of the factory Trans Am racing effort in the late 60's, and culminated in the winning of the Trans Am Championship in 1972 and 1973. For the 1970 season, the AMC Javelin Trans Am team missed a first place finish to Ford by only 1 point.
An upgraded aluminum intake manifold, finned aluminum valve covers and an Edelbrock 650 cfm carburetor are also installed, however note that the original valve covers are included with the car. The console shift automatic transmission was also rebuilt and works beautifully, shifting with authority.
We have owned, restored and maintained various AMC vehicles since the 70's, including several AMX's and other show-winning Javelins. This rare and exceptional Donohue Javelin has also been painstakingly maintained and cared for by us, and always stored indoors amongour collection. Service work completed duringour ownership includes:
Upgraded shock absorbers
New dual exhaust
A/C service
All fluids and filters changed as needed
Gauges removed and bench-tested
This Mark Donohue Signature Edition Javelin is stable, agile, and incredibly fast, having also participated in the Muscle Car 1000 road rally, finishing with flying colors. It has been invited and shown at various Concours d'Elegance events in the Southern California area, including the prestigious Palos Verdes concours at the Trump golf course, the Los Angeles Concours at the Rose Bowl and the Muckenthaler concours. It has also won first and second-in-class trophies at west coast AMC shows at the Hot Rod Museum in Pomona.
This west coast AMC sports its original configuration of Commodore Blue Metallic over blue Ventilair interior. The prior owner stated:
"This is a beautifully presented Mark Donohue Javelin, surely one of the best in existence. The Commodore Blue with the white reverse "C stripe" is a stunning combination. The paint is of absolute show quality and the body is as straight as it gets!"
As to be expected from a high quality car, even the trunk is restored correctly with the proper mat, space saver tire and air-inflation canister. And, the very rare “ram air” components are intact under the hood.
It's body lines and performance rivaland perhaps surpass that ofmany other pony cars, with the additional benefit of being much more rare and unique. When driving this rare piece of American history you are guaranteed to attract many accolades, comments and questions from others on the road. She is ready to be drooled over, gawked at, admired, driven and enjoyed. To restoreanother Mark Donohue Javelin to this condition would likely cost $100,000+ these days, so bid with confidence and retain one for much less than half that amount.
The pictures of the car do a better job of representing her ultra clean and sharp condition. Yet even then, she's much more striking and impressive in person, so the photos don't quite do her justice. Please see this link for many additional picturesand we hope to have some videos posted soon as well...

I meant to include our reply to the below comments/question for all to read, but mistakenly did't check the appropriate box. So, here it is...(btw, the answer is Offenhauser valve covers)...
Dear sdaal,
Greetings from nice, warm Tucson! First off, what a magnificent Donohue you have here. For all that read this, until you have been behind the wheel of one of these...you have no idea what a superb handling automobile these '70 Javs are when coupled with the upgraded suspension that comes with these. I fortunate enough to have the twin to this one, in frost white w/red cloth guts and the 4spd. Guys that drive mine are blown away, and immediately get out from behind the wheel and tell me " you gotta sell me this car!!" I kid you not...I'm serious! Anyhow, just a quick question, please. Who makes those handsome valve covers you have on this 360? Thank you for your time, and best of luck with your auction. joel in tucson
