Description for Audi Cabriolet 1965
OK, this is a MAJOR project and should only be taken on by someone who is pretty handy and has the ability to search for parts worldwide. But this unusual DKW is a rare piece that could be worth a lot when completed. In Europe, rare examples of this low-production convertible are sold for as much as $50K.The DKW company, which was the leader in 2-stroke engine development, is represented by one of the rings of the Audi logo. In the 1930s, 4 companies came together to form Auto Union and Audi and DKW were two of them. Shortly after this DKW was made, the company was folded into Audi - the only remaining brand from the Auto Union merger.
This car has an 889cc 45hp 3-cylinder 2-stroke engine and 4-spd trans (column shift). The engine is locked up and I have removed it. Not sure if this particular engine can be revived, but I am not going to be the one to try to do it!
NOTE: some of the pictures show the vehicle fully assembled, others show it with the engine removed.
This car sat out in the dessert in the Southwest and has a very solid body. However, after the sun destroyed the top, seats and dash, the occasional rainfall did stand in the LF floor area and rusted that out. But otherwise an excellent body for restoration. The windows and top mechanisms go up and down nicely. The car rolls and steers nicely.
This is one of the last 2-stroke cars made in the Western world (Trabants were built in East Germany until the 90s) and was one of the few DKW's with disc brakes. It also has oil-injection, an advancement that saves the hassle of mixing oil and gas.
Save this beautiful little convertible if you have the ability, it's a really interesting little car that needs to be brought back to glory!
