Description for Austin Healey 3000 1959
This auction is for a stunning California, lack plate, ustin Healey100-6. It really is a lovely example of a matching numbers classic that is being offered as part of an estate. It was purchased in 2002 and has been well taken care of since then, eing driven lightly and always garaged. It was recently been professionally checked out and a few minor repairs were taken care of along with a new battery, ull tune-up and service and it is now ready for its new owner. This is an older restoration that still looks amazing and drives very well.
Starting easily from cold it has plenty of power and has the wonderful exhaust tone that sets the early Healey’s apart. The engine reportedly has been over-bored to give better performance and it is mechanically quiet with a very smooth idle. The transmission is original, he overdrive works well, ice and quiet in first and reverse. Second gear synchro is weak and will grind when changing down however it slips into gear easily if a little throttle is applied during the shift. Rear axle is silent. The engine runs nice and cool with good oil pressure and no unwanted noises and does not “run on”. The steeringsmooth having a little more play than I would like, t may benefit from a steering box adjustment. The rideis firm yet forgiving with no unwanted noise over bumps, t feels very solid. The car tracks very straight and the brakes stop the car easily - although the pedal has some play, ot unusual on these drum brake cars. The hand brake works well and holds firmly. Driving this car is just a pleasure.
The interior has been nicely done with new vinyl seat kits and panels along with new carpet. The dash is very presentable and all is functioning – even the high beam warning works. There has been a voltage gauge fitted on the passenger side. The steering wheel has been nicely leather wrapped which provides a nice feel. There are lap belts fitted for the front seats. The door seal is starting to separate on the drivers side.
The car has had the useful upgrades of an alternator and a hitorque starter that both function well. The wiring looks excellent, he gauges, ights horn wipers etc. all work along with all the other electrical items. The indicators however do not self cancel and the ignition switch is a newer British replacement. There is an original SU fuel pump that has been recently fitted.
Under the bonnet is clean and tidy and there is an oil cooler with stainless lines fitted, hich is a worthwhile addition.
The trunk locks with the key and contains a painted wire wheel with an older tire that looks deflated. There is no hold down for the wheel either. The toneau is older and would probably have to be left in the sun to allow it to be fitted. The convertible top frame is in good shape and the top is not ripped but the plastic window is starting to yellow. It too looks like it would need to be left in the sun for a while to soften up.
It sits on a very nice set of wider chrome wire wheels shod with nearly new 195/65 Continental tires
The paint is older but in very good condition it has a very nice deep shine and not chipped or scratched. There are a couple of small white marks on the right front fender near the headlight that may polish out. The body is extremely straight having very good gaps all around, he doors opening and closing well, lways a good sign. Reportedly all of the body and paint work done to this car was performed by a master craftsman usin no plastic filler.
The chrome is mostly good the headlight rims and windshield frame is fading and could use re-plating and the rear bumper has some small blisters starting to show. The lisc plate lamp works but the chrome is starting to show rust. The windshield glass is not scratched or chipped.
Underneath the car is very original and fairly dry no major oil leaks. The floors look original and in good condition. There have been the usual repairs around the inside of the rear fenders near the front and also some strengthening plates welded to the frame below the rear axle and where the front sway bar mounts to the chassis – see pictures.
As far as the rest of the car the pictures speak for themselves, truly spectacular example of a well presented automotive work of art. If you have any more questions please feel free to ask. My descriptions are very detailed and generally a little over critical as I want you the buyer to be happy with your purchase. As always I would recommend driving and viewing the car if at all possible. Please call (310) 833 1525 for an appointment. Bid to buy with confidence, have sold many British classics on e-bay with only good feedback
