Southern California Car from New

1-SoCal Owner for 40 Years

You can’t really call yourself a car guy or gal until you’ve owned a BMW 2002. These Bavarian bargains are among the last true vintage sport car values left. Porsche 911 and 356 prices have skyrocketed. Even good Alfas are hard to find and growing in value. What makes 2002s so desirable is that they are affordable to own, blast to drive, nd very reliable…the perfect vintage touring/rallying car.

This 2002 was built on November 29th, 968 and sold new by Helane Motors of Alhambra, alifornia…one of the first BMW dealers of Southern California. It lived most of its life in Alhambra with the same family until February 16th, 008 when a local BMW enthusiast found the car in a garage where it slept for nearly 20-years.

This enthusiast is a long time active BMW guy in the SoCal community and a part of what we call the “Knights of the Roundel Table” here in Costa Mesa. He enjoys finding original survivors and bringing them to the next level. Although it hadn’t run in 20-years, t was stored nicely and as a result, t was very dry. Also, pon inspection, here were no signs of rot, ancerous rust, r accidents. So, or the next several years, e began to bring this 02 back to life.

The first major step was to get it running again. Unfortunately, he motor was in bad shape. So, e had it completely rebuilt, hich included:

Thermal cleaning of block

Hone block

New Mahle flat top pistons and cylinders

New rings and bearings

Deck block and front cover

Resize connecting rods and fit pin bushings

Polish crankshaft

Resurface flywheel

Replaced oil pump

Valve job

Resurface head and front cover

R&R/bronze valve guides and size to valves

Assemble long block

Replace rocker shafts, iming chain, il pump drive chain, nd chain rail set

Furthermore, his owner decided to go through the rest of the car’s mechanicals and make sure everything was in great running condition. Highlights of recent repairs include:

Rebuilt correct Solex carburetor

New clutch slave and master cylinder

Replaced distributor (rebuilt ‘74tii)

New horns

New fuel pump

Repair radiator and replace fan

New front brake pads and rotors

Refurbished E21 front brake calipers

Replaced brake booster

Replaced all hoses and belts

New axle boots

Yokohama tires and alignment (2k miles ago)

Replaced exhaust system

New ball joints, ie rods, nd control arms

New clutch kit

New Bilstein HD shocks, trut inserts/bearings, nd suspension bushings

Refurbished the heater core

Detailed undercarriage

H4 Halogen headlights with relay

Correct coil (higher ohm resistor)

Pertronix electronic ignition

The final step was to clean up the cosmetics. The car was painted over 25-years ago in it’s original color. It was a decent paint job, ut was showing some age. So, ots of polishing by a local concours specialist really brought the paint back to life. There are still minor blemishes that have been touched-up. The windshield was replaced with a correct Sigla glass. The rest of the windows are original as is the chrome trim. While the motor was being rebuilt, he engine bay was restored with fresh paint and correct decals. New hubcaps were also installed on fresh Yokohama tires in the correct 13” size.

The goal with the interior was to freshen it up but maintain that original survivor look. Good condition seats with the correct original basket-weave vinyl (NLA) were found and used to restore the existing seats including new padding. The door panels and headliner are original and in very nice condition. The dash is a rare (NLA) 3-piece dash with original defrost vents. Two very good condition ones were located and used to make one nice original dash with the exception of a crack on the passenger side (see pic). The gauge cluster was carefully restored. The original Blaupunkt radio was rebuilt using modern components with an auxiliary/mp3 capability. Fresh sound pads were installed under the new German square-weave carpet. Finally, or safety, odern 3-point retractable seatbelts were installed and carefully hidden. The original belts are included.

The car was finished a few years ago and this owner decided to move onto another BMW project, o he sold it to a local enthusiast. This owner only put about a 1,000-miles on the car, ut he changed the oil regularly. Unfortunately, ue to his family expanding, e no longer has the time to enjoy this special 2002 and has asked us to find a new caretaker.

There is something special about the way a nicely sorted and well-preserved BMW 2002 drives. It is solid yet light and nimble. The steering and shifting feel intuitive. The braking is strong and the acceleration has great low-end torque. This would make a wonderful turnkey vintage touring car for any event.

California registration is paid through January of 2017.

This BMW 2002 includes extra keys, riginal spare, uel filler adapter, ack, ool kit, eceipt receipts, riginal seat belts, nd owner’s manuals.
