Description for BMW 2002 1969
1969 BMW 2002. Originally a Verona red automatic sunroof model but with a transplant newer engine (71 model) and 4 speed transmission. I bought this car with a second 2002 purchase in 2004. I never tried to start the engine – I just wanted to save it for maybe future resto. It has been stored in a solid roof shelter and out of the weather since then (currently pulled out into yard). The previous owner was first owner (Chesapeake. Virginia) and started a restoration in the late 80s but abandoned it sometime in the early 90s. It is a southern car seldom exposed to snow and away from the ocean. Body was protected with most likely an epoxy type high build primer during resto which is good (it will have to come off ). Car sat outside for roughly 10 years. but with a cover that eventually rotted away. Some rust from water mostly sitting in the door frames. maybe some leakage from windshield gasket. Body has potential. but will need some welding/fabrication. Rust issues will necessitate having to replace the trunk spare tire well. left forward frame rail. pedal box. and hood hinges (see pics). The remainder of the rust issues can be repaired with welded patches. Right front frame rail has rust but looks fair to good. Left rear shock tower perfect. right rear shock tower localized rust low. Rockers. fenders. and rear quarters are solid and way above average. Floor pans solid except for rust hole at accelerator pedal (related to bad frame rail). one minor rust hole passenger side rear. and rust starting where pans meet interior rocker. Some rust holes at base of rear window and maybe some around rear lip of wheel arch. Door skins at base are rusted out. The donor engine is from a 71 2002 that completely rusted out. The engine was purportedly very solid with high compression pistons. 121 cylinder head. and maybe a performance cam – cannot verify. It does have high performance headers. but oddly a 1 bbl Solex. I have not opened engine up. Caveat emptor. Interior components available. Dash has usual cracks. have driver’s seat. door cards with fairly good vinyl. I can scrounge up some tail light. and some slightly dicked-up grills (painted black. bent. with mesh over light covers). Headliner shot. Glass good. This car is rough. but is salvageable especially with the rising value of the “roundie” pre-74 models. and with a factory sunroof and the larger transmission tunnel that can accommodate the 5-speed transplants. Have no illusions it needs a lot of work. but if you are willing to sand/media/ice blast the shell. are good with a MIG welder. put it on a rotisserie. and invest the time – you could have a nice 2002. Body VIN 2530784 - June 1969. Engine VIN 2574596 (Summer 1971 standard trans car).
