Description for BMW Z1 1991
The BMW Z1 was the second roadster produced after the famous BMW 507 from the 50´s. It was produced from March 1989 to June 1991. The Z1 featured doors which dropped down into the door sills. A total of 8,000 cars were produced. All the Z1s were left-hand drive. Its attractive and revolutionary design make that BMW had 5,000 orders before production began. In 1988, BMW was quoted as saying that they had 35,000 orders for the Z1. None of the production was sold in North America making this car very rare in USA. The BMW Z1 has become an icon for its design, and specially for its body panels since BMW offered extra body panels as an accessory meaning that the panels (hence the car color) could be changed within 40 minutes.
This particular Z1 was sold new in 1991 in Bogota, Colombia. (South America) It was sent in 1991 from the factory to the local BMW dealership in Bogota, and sold to a well known doctor who had it until 2010, for almost 20 years. He only drove this car during the weekends and serviced it regularly at authorized dealerships. This car was 48.000 kms (almost 30.000 miles) in dry Bogota with an average all year long temperature of 64 F. It was recently imported to Florida by airplane from Bogota and its now offered with a clean Florida title. This particular example still wears its original dark green color, wheels, green dashboard and carpets, german soft top, sport steering wheel, BMW cassette stereo. The only modification was the upholstery made 10 years ago with a high quality German leather. Most of the Z1s do not wear the original upholstery because it was made with a very delicate suede.
The car is mechanically sound and drives great. The only noticeable issues is a peel at the speedometer, and the upholstery that is not original. As you can see in the pictures it has no sign of rust since the car has never been driven in snow, rain or salted roads.
The last service was done 1.000 miles ago with an oil service, brake pads, brake fluids and new Yokohama cdrive tires. It also received a nice paint detailing. The car has not extensive service records. It just have stickers on the engine bay showing the last services of the last few years at authorized BMW dealership.
The Z1 is a great car, lightweight and equipped with the 2.5 liters bullet proof engine from the e30 and ABS brakes. Great summer car you can drive with the doors and roof open. Very few in USA and probably this is the only one in the market. The car was recently imported and is the first time it is offered for sale in the USA.
