Description for BMW 5-Series 1988

1988 BMW 528e “super” eta

Please watch the video here at the end of the description.

I have all of the original documentation that came with the car.

All of the work described below was done within the last two years and was performed mostly by Kadunza, a reputable BMW restoration shop in Knoxville, TN. Any work that they didn’t do I did myself.

The original engine break-in sticker is still on the windshield

The dash has 1 small crack by the defrost vents, as shown in the photos. The rest of the dash is beautiful.

New Kenwood Excelon stereo with Bluetooth capability and integrated microphone. It was professionally installed and wired correctly so the factory amp still works with the speakers…even the factory fader knob works.

Air flow meter rebuilt by Bavarian Restoration.

New General Altimax tires. Not the best handling tires but they are super smooth.

Brand new OEM brand radiator

New Bilstein B4 OE gas shocks…not HD’s. They ride very nice.

All new suspension gear replaced with OEM Lemfoerder. Subframe bushings, rear pitman arms, sway bar links front and back, tie rods, upper and lower control arms, center link, etc.

A/C works okay, it was converted to 134a before I took ownership. The fan motor squeaks a little, but the heater blower works fine.

New OEM Bremi wires, Bosch plugs, Bosch distributor cap, rotor button and coil. Maybe 15k miles on them.

Valves adjusted 5-10k miles ago

Single fuel pump conversion performed. Dual pumps replaced with brand new single unit for newer BMW, along with the fuel filter.

Remanufactured calipers, braided stainless steel brake lines, Stop Tech pads and OEM rotors, and fresh fluid

Gates timing belt w/pulley

New trans fluid and filter, and cooling line.

New Sachs fan clutch

New coolant temperature sensor

New Bosch fuel pressure regulator

Fuel injectors cleaned and tested by injector RX

Camshaft seal

Water pump

Power steering drive belt

Power steering pump

Alternator drive belt

Crank position sensor

Power steering hose, reservoir, radiator hose lower

Bosch oxygen sensor

New rocker plugs

Original owners manual

The odometer gears are original as far as I know…they have never stopped turning and the mileage is accurate.

The bad:

The car has a slight hesitation when it is very cold outside while warming up. After the car warms up it disappears completely.

The exhaust system rattles when the car is stopped and in gear. I’ve only just noticed this so this is something new that’s happened since I was driving the car. You can’t really hear it in the car with the windows up.

The right rear window doesn’t roll down…I think it’s a power issue but I haven’t investigated further.

I was sideswiped by a hit and run driver on the highway and there is some light damage to the driver’s side of the car, as shown in photos.

There is a light power steering leak

The transmission shifts a little hard. The transmission accelerator cable needs a slight adjustment, no big deal. The car still drives just fine.

The electric mirrors don’t work

The driver’s side door lock cylinder needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Locking the doors is only possible manually by reaching in through the back door or using the passenger side lock cylinder. This is very common on these cars.

The paint is starting to look weathered but still has a decent gloss to it.
