Description for Buick Riviera 1966
For 1966 the Riviera was totally redesigned with a svelte, low body and new version of hideaway headlamps. The engine line up changed with the 401 discontinued and the use of the 425 V8 standardized. The base version put out 340 horsepower with a single four barrel but a dual quad version pumped out 360 ponies and was marketed as the Super Wildcat. 1966 was a transitional year for the GS Super Wildcat option as the factory brought it in house starting in March 1, 1966.Buick started out with the Super Wildcat option as a dealer conversion just like in 1965. Since there was intense reluctance from dealers who wanted nothing to do with building banker hot rods with the MW code base engine, the marketing executives decided it had to be done at the plant. After March, a dual quad AssemblyLine Built Riviera used the MZ code blocks. Production was 5,718 GS cars that year. However only 179 factory coded MZ Super Wildcat Riviera GSs were ever made. The dealers were in theory, supposed to be able to order all the goodies needed to do a Super Wildcat conversion but apparently so few of them were willing to do it that a decision was made at Flint to go ahead and make 179 such engines for use in Riviera GS. As it was a 1966 only deal, this pretty much makes the dual quad 1966 Riviera GS the rarest factory dual quad Buick muscle car ever. They exist, but who has seen one? Well You have now ! This is a one owner. Car was given away at the Atlanta Regional Buick salesmen convention at Callaway Gardens on June 20th, 1966. Car has original title, window sticker and Protecto Plate. Oct 1978 he had the vinyl top removed and painted the roof with lacquer paint. Four NOS center caps come with the car. Original Firestone redline spare tire never out of trunk or the jack never used. The car resided in his carport its entire time. He lived 1.5 miles from work is the reason mileage is so low and he had his last company car an 84 buick at the time of his death.
