Description for Buick Grand National 1984

1984 Buick Grand National One Owner From New 114,330 Miles Two-Tone Grey Leather & Cloth T-Top VIDEO WITH LISTING VIN: 1G4AK4798EH562744 1: USA G: GM 4: Buick A: Restraint System K: Regal T-Type 47: 2dr Coupe 9: 3.8L SFI Turbo 8: Check Digit E: 1984 Model Year H: Flint, Michigan Assembly Plant 562744: Sequence Number This ‘84 Grand National was purchased new at Lynch Buick here in Chicago by a salesman in the music recording industry. He had also purchased a new Maserati Biturbo around the same time, and the two cars split daily-driving duty for the first... ten or so years of his ownership. The Grand National was his absolute favorite, and he managed to put over 114,000 miles on the car over the course of his ownership. The car was finally parked indefinitely in his garage in 2014, and we took it out of storage in late 2018. Since purchasing the car we have given it a thorough inspection, tended to a number of service items, and begun to add a bit of mileage. Over the course of the last few months we have replaced the power steering pump and hoses, power steering belt, air pump belt, fan and AC belt, timing cover gasket, oil pan gasket, oil pressure switch, turbo oil feed line, changed the oil, oil filter, air filter, and bled the brakes. As it sits, this Grand National is a nicely presented driver-level example. While we wouldn’t call it totally dialed yet, it runs well and is in driving order. Please see the mechanical portion at the end of this listing for a real run-through of what’s going on there. Exterior: - Please see the video along with the listing, as the car is shown in detail. Every blemish on the car is shown close-up and in direct sunlight. Blemishes are primarily related to bubbling on the lower corners. The plastic filler pieces on the rear are also all cracked up. Again, please defer to the video/photos for a closer look. We do have a relationship with a nearby body shop that can replace and paint the plastic filler pieces at the buyer’s request. - The car was repainted once in the mid 1990s to combat the general chips and scratches that come along with close to 100,000 miles of highway driving. Paint was done to a high standard; there is no dust under the paint or visible paint run. Paint presents very well. - Glass and light lenses are all clear and crack-free. - Wheels are in excellent shape, with no damage or oxidation. Tires are in nice shape, with no dry rot or significant wear, but we are not positive of when the tires were manufactured. - T-Tops are in great shape. This was a dealer-installed option when new; this car is not one of the only 200 factory T-Top cars produced for ‘84. Interior: - The interior is undoubtedly the highlight of the car. Unrestored and excellent. Truly close-to-new throughout. This car has the desirable, 1984-only Lear Siegler cloth/leather interior. Extremely comfortable, and with the bolster knobs, the driver is really able to fit the seat to exactly their liking. Even the cloth outer bolsters show minimal wear. No punctures, scrapes, or damage of any sort on the seats. - Dash is free of any cracks, damage, or discoloring. - Digital dash display is all functional. The odometer has rolled over once, for an actual mileage of 114,330. - Fan and heat are functional. Air conditioning is not functional and remains on R12 refrigerant. - Unfortunately the sound system installed in the trunk is not functional. The original owner tells us that in the late 80s, this was one serious sound system. As a salesman in the music business, he had to make sure his Grand National really bumped! Under the Hood / Underbody: - This car is powered by its original drivetrain, the 3.8L SFI Turbo V6 and automatic transmission. While service documentation through the years is limited, we have given the car an inspection and tended to the immediate items we saw fit. Receipts for the services performed in the last few months will come with the car, as will the original manual and accompanying booklet. - Please take a look through the underbody photos, as it’s documented in detail. Underbody is pretty good. The car was professionally undercoated prior to going into storage in 2014, and that appears to be holding up quite well. There is some texture to the finish, so it looks as though some surface rust was sprayed over. Regardless, while there is some bubbling on body panels (see video), the underbody is actually very dry and structurally sound. We do not see any areas of through rust or anything close to it. There is a slight exhaust leak towards the rear, but the car is not excessively loud as a result, just a bit pulse-like. - The car runs and drives pretty well. It makes quite a bit of power, and under boost it really moves. The car starts up first turn, idles steady and cool, sounds great, pulls hard, shifts smoothly and on time, brakes straight, tracks straight, steering is nice and direct, and the ride quality is outstanding. This car eats up Chicago’s pothole-ridden streets with ease. The car is not perfect, however. Obviously it has seen very little use since 2014, and we’re still breaking it in post-service. There is a split-second of hesitation when first getting on the throttle, and the brake pedal is more firm and requires more effort than we’d like. Overall, this is a nice driver-level, one-owner car that just needs someone to put some miles on it and iron out the minor tendencies as they go along.
