When it comes to vintage automobiles, California and the West Coast of the United States have always been the most desirable the world over for many reasons; the mild climate and the fact that many automotive trends started in California. The automobile is the perfect technological symbol of American culture, a tangible expression of our quest to level space, time, and class and a reflection of our relentless mobility, social and otherwise. You see automobiles advertised the world over described as California cars because at some point they were in California or drove through California. A true California car is one that was sold new in California and titled in California, one that has the original plates that are on that title is a true California car.We are liquidating a collection of 300 actual California cars. This is a collection that took 70 years to comprise. Most have the original paint and original California licence plates issued to them when they were new.
This 1948 Buick Roadmaster is an original California time capsule that has spent the last half a century in storage. This possibly could be the oldest true original California car that was manufacturedin California. It has original paint and original interior. This is a running and driving Fireball Straight eight with under 100k miles. When this car was built it would have had a 1948 plate, then 1949 plate, 1950 then in 1951 you got a medal tag for each year. In 1956 a yellow plate and stickers for each year up to 1962 when it was replaced with the classic black and yellow "DAV 250" until 48 years ago in 1971 when the car was retired to storage up until 2019.
Mechanically: the 5.2L 320 cu in Fireball Straight Eight that fires up and runs great. There are no visable leaks. We are replacingthe radiator hose. This is a wonderful time capsule of a mechanical masterpiece.TheBuick Straight-8 engine (Fireball 8)was produced from 1931 to 1953 and sold in Buick automobilesLike many Americanautomobile Buick adopted the straight-8 in 1931 as a more powerful alternative to the previous engines. However, unlike most other car makers at the time, Buick had been using a valve-in-head/OHVover-head valve or I-head since its inception and continued this practice in their inline-8 designs. The engine was sold in different displacementsdepending on the model of car and the year and was constructed upon two distinct (possibly more) block castings. The smaller displacement versions internally resembled the inline Chevrolet straight six, with additional cylinders. The large block version (the 345 and 320, used in large-chassis models such as theRoadmaster) was considerably heavier and this weight adversely affected vehicle performance and handling. In earlier years the engines used cast-in-place bearings that were then machined, which made engine rebuilding an expensive procedure, but after 1937 they began using drop-in bearings. The last year for Buick's straight-8 was 1953.
Exterior: This Buick is in great original shape. The car is finished in it's original Verde Green and the original Grey Heather Bedford Cord Trim: #76that it left the South Gate California Assembly 71 years ago.Considering the paint is 71 years old it looks and shines great. It is not perfect there some low spots but considering it has lived through 13 presidents it gives the car a nice patina and shine. The body is in great shape and very straight. There is one noticeabledent in the drivers rear fender right behind the rear light. All the chrome from the grille to the rear bumper is in good shape and shines nicely. It is missing one trim piece on the passenger rear fender otherwise it is all there.
Interior: This Buick is in good shape. Again, everything is original and has never been restored let alone touched since the early 1970s. The seats are in good shape and have no rips or tears and are still pretty comfortable to sit in. The headliner is in fantastic condition with no flaws or sagging. The dash looks beautiful. The detail in the gauges and radio pieces is unmatched and a relic from a by gone era. There steering wheel is in great shape with no flaws. The carpet does show its age after 71 years and is not perfect but still there. Overall the interior is in great shape but not perfect does have some authentic patina but is all there.NO RESERVE THIS ITEM WILL SELL TO THE FINAL BIDDER!This listing includes well over 100 detailed photos and the vehicle has been described as descriptive as possible. If there is anything that is unclear or additional information is is need please don't hesitate to ask. Please ask any questions before bidding. Thanks and Good Luck
