Description for Buick Series 50 Super 1955

OVERVIEW:This 1955 Buick Super Riviera 2-Door Hardtop Coupe shows 48,703 miles, which may be original but cannot be confirmed. A USA built car, originating from GM's California assembly plant, it was one of 85,666 of these popular models built. It is a model 56R with body style #55-4537.

It is powered by a Buick nailhead V8 engine with Dynaflow automatic transmission. It is a very solid, reliable and roadworthy driver with a very smooth and quiet running engine, and excellent road manners with a smooth ride and nice handling characteristics.

Judging by the overall solid and rust free condition it would appear to have been a dry western car all its life. Upon coming into Alberta some time ago, it passed Alberta's out-of-province mechanical inspection and has been Alberta registered and licensed. With only minor updates for reliability, it remains for the most part original and indications are that it has had regular maintenance and routine mechanical work performed as required.

Overall the car is very clean and shows very well. It is absolutely solid throughout with no rust issues whatsoever.A solid and straight body, very respectable paint work, comfortable and appealing interior, beautiful chrome, and healthy mechanicals make this car ready to be driven and enjoyed as it is.An excellent opportunity to acquire an affordable mid-50's hardtop cruiser.

This listing provides many more details as you scroll thru, including a short video clip of engine start up and running.Near the end of this listing under Payment Terms you will also find a link to a photo album of over 130 pics.

DRIVETRAIN:The Buick 'nailhead' V8 engine starts easily, sounds good, runs smooth, and does not smoke.Although it is a period correct Buick V8, it is unclear if this is the original engine to the car, so it may be either a 264 or 322 ci. block. Both versions were available in '55. This one is fueled by a Carter 2 bbl. carb, manufactured in St. Louis, rebuilt in Canada, and the front of the crankshaft has a harmonic balancer with double pulley.

The engine bay is overall clean and tidy, all belts, hoses and radiator appear in good condition.A few minor updates have been made for driving dependability.- original fuel pump has been replaced with a frame mounted electric pump- the generator has been replaced with an alternator- an electric wiper motor has been added- has a custom chrome dry element air cleaner- some updated wiring is evident- a transmission cooler is mounted ahead of the radiator- a plastic windshield washer reservoir is mounted behind left inner fender

The Dynaflow 2-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly as it should. No notable leaks coming from the engine, tranny or diff other than the typical sweat drip.

CHASSIS:The frame is totally solid and straight, with no evidence of collision damage or rust problems anywhere.Body mounts are all solid, basically is just shows the road dust and dirt of its miles.

Equipped with power steering and standard brakes. All suspension, steering and brake system components appear as original equipment without modifications.Over recent years many mechanical items have been addressed to keep the car in good roadworthy condition.Exhaust system appears relatively new and in very good condition.Gas tank is in very good condition. No dents in spare tire well which has drain plugs in place.

Running tires are a matched set of Yokohama Ageis LS4 235/70R15 radials, with wide white walls and excellent tread remaining. They are mounted on original rims and sport full disc wheel covers. The right rear cover is missing the bars on either side of the center cap. Spare in a non-matching bias ply with good tread.

BODY & PAINT:There is no evidence of any major collision damage or rust out on this car. Overall, the body and original sheet metal on this car are quite straight and very solid. No signs of any major body work or rust repairs anywhere. The body mounts, floor pans, inner and outer rockers, trunk pan and drop down panels appear all original and very solid, no patchwork evident. You could not hope for a more solid undercarriage. Bottoms of both doors are very solid, same for lower edge of trunk lid.

The car has had a repaint in its original color. Although it does not appear to have been polished, the paint is quite nice and smooth with good luster and reflection, and is in overall very good condition.

INTERIOR:Very nice and comfortable interior looks fresh and in excellent condition, from headliner to carpet and in between. Quality of workmanship is evident, tastefully done in appropriate fabrics.

Dash and interior has much bright work. Some minor pitting on speedo surround.Chrome roof bows and window surrounds accent the interior.Secondary bright moldings above side windows should be present to cover screws at ends of bows, but are missing and were likely lost during headliner installation for previous owner. Thru photo research they appear to be common to 1955-56 models as well as both 2 and 4-door hardtops, possibly others, so should not be impossible to find.

The steering wheel, horn ring and center emblem are in nice condition.Equipped with day/night mirror. The pedal pads show next to no wear, possible indicator of original miles.

Shaded windshield has a vertical crack at far left with delamination along the crack, does affect forward vision.Right door glass has a short crack near top forward corner, also not obstructive to view.Left rear quarter glass has some minor sander swirl scratches along bottom. All glass channels and whiskers appear as new, same for door and trunk weather-strips.Trunk lined and carpeted to match interior. There is no jack.

ELECTRICAL:This car has a 12 volt electrical system, with a cut-off switch at the battery.Original temp gauge not working, dual under dash oil/temp gauges added under dash, but only that temp gauge is functional.Original amp, oil pressure, and fuel gauges in working order.Original parking brake indicator light, power antenna and heater fan work. Some digits on odometer are sun faded, some not, indicative that the car sat in sunny outdoors for some time but has seen some miles since. Also a possible indicator of original miles.

Electric wipers in working order, switch under dash.Starter button under dash, right of column next to Holley manual choke.Original WonderBar Selectronic radio and clock are not working. The horn is not working, problem not investigated.

Head lamps upgraded to halogen.Front park light lenses have some crazing but no cracks.Tail light and back up lenses in nice condition.

BRIGHTWORK:All external chrome and stainless trim is on the car and in overall very good to excellent condition. Both bumpers and guards are in great condition with excellent new chrome.

Hood bar, grille, and grille center bar and emblem are all very nice.Other chrome plated pot metal items such as head lamp and tail lamp housings also in real nice rechromed condition. No pits on the hood ornament or BUICK hood letters.Nice original fender Ventiports.

Stainless window surround trim and stainless side moldings also in very good condition with no damage.Stainless door flippers are functional.
