Description for Cadillac Other 1949
This 1949 Cadillac Series 61 is in running drivable condition. It is a good candidate for an original restoration. or to continue on as a rat rod. It has a 331 OHV V8 engine. and a Hydra-Matic transmission (4 speed automatic). The title is listed as a Series 62. but the tag on the body has it as a Series 61. The trim on it appears to be a 61. The VIN on the engine matches the one on the title. I have had the VIN verified by the local law enforcement. and everything checked out. I am guessing that the engine has been replaced at some time with another engine correct for this car. To help you make an informed purchase. I will describe everything wrong with this car that I am aware of. The main problem or concern is that the engine smokes and leaks oil. The smoke it gives off is white. It leaks about a quart of oil every two weeks if it is driven a lot (2-4 times a week). but not very much if it is just parked. My guess would be the rear main seal. Transmission oil does not appear to be leaking or the rear end. The passenger side floor pan is rusted through in some spots. The smoke comes up through that spot because the exhaust is not finished. It only has a muffler on it. There is some rust/cancer behind both front wheels in the rocker area. The drivers side is worse than the passenger side. There is some rust and cancer on the trim and rear bumper. The front bumper has two spots that have been pulled down. probably from pulling the car with a chain that had two hooks. The windshield needs to be replaced or it can be driven as it is. I haven't had a problem driving it like it is. There is a leak on the passenger side of the windshield which is the cause of the rusted floor pan and the missing glove box that rotted out. The back window leaks too and all the weather stripping is gone. The drivers side glass is missing. and the passenger side is cracked. The front door handles are loose and sag due to the tumbler inside being worn. Radio was working when I purchased the car. but I turned it off and have not been able to get it back on. I think it is the on/off switch. Clock does not work. The speedometer quit working last time I drove the car and one of the reverse lenses is cracked. The odometer says 87. 00 but I have no idea how many times it has rolled. The mileage is exempt on the title. When the heater is on (which works) I noticed a small drop of antifreeze from the heater valve. There is a vacuum leak under the dash. so the wipers are not working. The engine mounted fuel pump has been replaced with an electric pump. If the car has been sitting for more than three days I have to pour some gas in the carb to start it. There is no interior. I have used two Mexican blankets for seat covers. and it works good. Those are all the problems I have noticed so far. The positive things about the car are that it runs and drives good. During the summer I drove the car at least once a week. It shifts smoothly and at the correct speeds. Power seems adequate. There are no unusual noises in the engine or drive train. The brakes are good and do not pull to one side or the other. Steering is good and straight. The body does not have any big dents or dings. Everything seems to line up good. The paint is a flat black. There are some imperfections in the paint though. The grill is in great condition. and all the emblems are there. All the lights work except one back-up light that has a bad ground at the light. Gauges and horn work. The back curved glass is good and the back passenger windows are decent. New parts were put on by the previous owners and as far as I can tell they are new. They are new brakes. radiator. water pump. electric fuel pump. 6 volt battery. 6 volt generator . regulator. cap. rotor. and valve covers. The car has been lowered approximately 3" by cutting the front springs. and adding blocks to the back. The ride is really smooth.
