Description for Cadillac Eldorado 1958

Museum Quality restoration with bills & receipts. SPECTACULAR!!! Exterior: Black Interior: Black & White Leather Roof: Stainless Steel Serial Number: 58PO35234 Body Number: PD-539 Transmission: 4/speed automatic Engine: Original Cadillac 365 V-8 with 3/2 bbl carbs Mileage on the title is listed as ACTUAL 49. 82. The current odometer reading is 49. 08 Mileage driven since restoration has been completed is just over 200 miles. This 1958 Eldorado Brougham is 1 out of 304 produced in 1958. A total of just 400 such cars were produced in 1957. thus the entire production run was 704 cars. In 1957/1958 this was the most expensive car produced in the world and cost $2000 more than a Rolls Royce. The MSRP was a staggering $13. 74. That would translate into a present day MSRP of somewhere between $450. 00-$500. 00 or the price of a top of the line Rolls Royce. This was a "Motorama Masterpiece" and was conceived in the design studio headed by world renowned designer. Harley Earl. Harley Earl's innovations and incredible design contributions are widely credited with the creation of the MODERN CAR. When Harley joined GM they had no real design studio and by the time Harley retired from GM in 1959. they had 5000+ employees in the design studio. I am friends with Harley's Grandson. Richard Earl. who moved from Detroit to Palm Beach several years ago. He has created the most amazing site for the contributions his Grandfather contributed to the automotive industry and GM. It is called CAR OF THE CENTURY and is really worth while visiting. The car was first shown in 1955 at the L. A. Auto shown and received a tremendous response. This still remains the ONLY car that was a "Motorama Masterpiece" that went into actual production just as it was shown at the New York Motorama show at the Astor Hotel in the early fall of 1956. It was a "Car of the Future" that could be purchased now! Cadillac claims to have lost more than $10. 00 on each car produced. The list of owners of these cars looks like a list of "Who's Who" Just to name a few. Frank Sinatra. Bob Hope. President Dwight Eisenhower. Mr. Davidson from Harley/Davidson. William Harrah. Judy Garland. Dean Martin. Al Jolson. Cecil B. DeMille and the list goes on and on. If you were not "somebody special" it was nearly impossible to order one of these cars and all of the production was sold out almost immediately. It is important to note that other than a hand built 1929-1938 Duesenberg. dual-cowl Phaeton with the famous V-16 Dusenberg engine. the 1957/1958 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham is the MOST EXPENSIVE ever built American car to restore. If you fortunate enough to currently own one of this incredible cars and want to restore it to the level of this car. be prepared to spend between $250. 00 to as much as $400. 00 or more to restore your car. This car was purchased in 2006 in Arizona for $60. 00 in it's completely original and unrestored state. It's owner had passed away and his widow decided to sell her husband's beloved and rare Eldorado Brougham. We were told that he had purchased the car sometime in the 1970's from the original owner who was famous and well known in the motion picture industry and lived in Hollywood. California. but unfortunately she could not recall the person's name. We spent in excess of $180. 00 during the 3 year restoration process and Roger has spent an additional $35. 00 since buying this car a few years ago. Including the original acquisition price of $60. 00. a total of $275. 00 has been spent on the car (Plus the amount Roger paid the Cars Of Dreams Museum for this car!). don't panic. you will be able to buy this incredible car for a fraction of that amount. remember this. the one who does the restoration of a special car like this. always loses. It is done for the love and passion of owning a very special piece of automotive history like this. not with the intention or thought of making a profit. I was thinking of scanning all of the bills and receipts on this car but we soon realized that would result in hours of reading time and make the auction far too long and boring. Everything has been saved and will accompany the sale of this magnificent car. I don't think that having a famous first owner would increase the value of this particular car due to the fact the EVERY original owner was either famous or extremely wealthy. Remember that in this time period you could buy a very nice home in the $8000-$10. 00 range so this car cost more than most houses at this time. The car was transported to South Florida in 2006 and shortly thereafter the restoration process was begun. The car was completely disassembled with all of the interior and glass carefully removed and all the window motors removed. (6 motors as even the vents are power operated). the engine and all the engine accessories were taken out. the fenders. hood. trunk was removed and the undercarriage was completely stripped including removal of suspension. exhaust. fuel and brake lines. fuel tank and then the undercarriage was completely sand blasted. Also all of the carpeting. padding. nbsp;headliner. door panels and trunk lining were removed. Of course every bit of chrome. pot metal and stainless were removed and were professionally re plated (triple chrome plated) and the stainless was all highly hand polished. Just the re plating invoices and stainless polishing were more than $20. 00. A few of the pieces did not come back from the chromers perfect the first time and consequently Felix redid them for us a 2nd time (at no charge). his work is EXCELLENT! All the rubbers and seals were removed and of course were later replaced with new factory correct ones. In 57 this model used 2-4 bbl carbs but in 58 they switched to 3/2bbl carbs which gave the same performance but a little better fuel economy. The paint was taken down to the bare metal and for a car that in 2006 that was almost 50 years old had a body that was in remarkable condition. What was truly amazing was the stainless steel top that was in nearly perfect original condition and only required a careful hand-polishing. The fit on all 4 doors is EXCELLENT. When you close any of the doors it sounds like a vault closing. The hood and trunk also fit EXCELLENT. The paint used is a very expensive two stage Du Pont lacquer and many coats were applied. Just has important as the type of paint and how the surfaces are prepped is how the car is wet-sanded when fully dried. It took a total of 90 man hours just to wet sand this car. the paint has an incredible DEEP shine and it looks almost like you could stick your hand inside the brilliant black finish. It would take hours to list everything that was done during this process but over 3000 man-hours of labor and almost 3 years to do everything that is contained in the invoices that will accompany the sale of this car. Most of the nuts. bolts. washers. clamps. nbsp;cotter keys. tc. were replaced with new correct ones but in some cases we cleaned and reused some of them. New hoses were utilized as were new brake lines. Five new period correct tires were used. They look just like the factory originals but are steel belted radials. The leather hydes (British spelling) for this interior was VERY expensive and was all hand sewn and it looks and smells fantastic. John who did the interior is a true artist. kudos to you John for an EXCELLENT job on the interior. trunk. headliner. carpeting and dash work. Your expensive but well worth it. you get what you pay for! The carpeting for this car is Mouton and also very expensive as is the special material that lines the trunk. The trunk is power and can be raised and lowered with the push of a button inside the glove box. Everything is special. even the special headliner and leather dash. The engine was completely PROFESSIONALLY rebuilt as was the complete braking system and power booster. The special generator and starter motor were rebuilt as was the entire coolant system. The AC Compressor was rebuilt by a specialist in the Tampa area at a cost of $905. 00. (Classic Auto AC) This car was acquired by the Cars Of Dreams Museum and was sold after a few years to it's present proud owner who lives in Colonial Beach. Virginia. Roger. the current owner. has spent additional money on this car. he said his invoices add up to almost $35. 00. I asked him how he had managed to spend more money on this car and he replied. "It was easy and it was fun" One of the things he did was to remove and have the automatic transmission completely rebuilt. He said "It didn't shift as smooth as I thought it should" He removed all of the gauges and sent them to Mike Rizzuto in California and had them completely rebuilt. all the receipts will accompany the car and just this process was nearly $10. 00! A total of 3 different sources were used to do all the gauges. Roger also replaced all of the car's fuel lines. (as a precaution because they had been cleaned but were all original) Roger has a fabulous collection of cars and really enjoys the best of the best and always tries to make them even better. He bought this car from the Cars Of Dreams Museum and also purchased and still owns the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible that was in the Cars Of Dreams Museum. This motorized bicycle was refined and eventually became the 1st automobile. (one cylinder) and his company became known as Daimler/Benz. (Mercedes Benz) (DaimlerChrysler today) James Dean Step back with us for a return to the middle of the twentieth century. The late. great fabulous 1950's. It was a wonderful time. offering so many new beginnings. as the terrible memories of World War II began to gradually fade and the dreams of our returning heroes and soldiers. as well as their families. could now be fully realized. With the promise of a lasting world peace. came the hope of prosperity and tranquility. all of which was soon to become a reality. Elvis "An Age of Innocence" The Fabulous Fifties was an "age of innocence" and as a young man growing up during this period. a guy would consider himself to be "lucky" if he was able to hold a girl's hand on their first date. If he got a peck on the cheek by their third date. well. he knew they were made for each other! It was an age of integrity and trust. One could actually leave your front and rear door unlocked and your car keys in your ignition. and when you returned. nothing would be missing. "The Rock n' Roll Era and the The Drive-In Craze" Book by Michael Karl Witzel Book by Don and Susan Sanders In the 1950's life was less complex and perhaps a little slower. People actually took time to wave from their convertibles to friends and to even smile to a stranger and even give a friendly "Hello" to a passerby. Remember those great nights at the local drive-in restaurant or those "make-out" sessions at the local drive-in movie theater. And the term "Parking" took on a whole new meaning. By the mid 1950's Rock n' Roll had burst onto the scene. Both new cars and souped-up hot rods had become part of the youth culture. The entertainment industry. not to be left out. brought out countless low-budget movies that brought teens to the drive-in movies by the thousands. By the early 1960's songs such as the Beach Boy's "409" and "Little Duece Coupe". The Ripchords "Hey Little Cobra" Jan & Dean's "Drag City" and Ronny and the Daytona's " GTO" were riding high on the charts. Our love affair with the Automobile was in "full bloom. " A few days prior to the new model cars being shown to the public. most new car dealerships would cover their showroom windows with brown paper. Many times I recall try to catch a peek or a glimpse of the new models. The American Public could hardly wait to see what new and exciting creations were about to be offered by Detroit. It is these very cars. the Cars of our Dreams. that we will feature and reminisce about. and every month we will offer stories and memories of these great "Cars of our Dreams. ". as well as offering the very best examples for sale. The cars of the 50's and 60's for the most part had "personality!" The great Chevys. Pontiacs. Cadillacs. Buicks and Oldsmobiles helped make GM a world leader and giant of the auto world. Ford produced fabulous cars including Ford Thunderbirds. Lincolns and Mercurys. Chrysler offered all those incredible Mopars. Plymouths. Desoto. Dodges. and Chrysler. 1959 Cadillac Brochure Cover Competition was fierce. but other marquees like Studebaker. AMC. Nash. Kaiser. Hudson. Muntz. Tucker. Avanti. etc. tried to capture a piece of this huge exploding marketplace. Unfortunately. they didn't have the dollar and staying power to compete with the "Big Three. " As the 1960's drew to a close. cars began to change. New EPA requirements and increasing prices for gasoline hasten the demise of the "Muscle" car. The horsepower race came to an end by the early 1970's. at least for a while. In 1976 Cadillac crushed the molds to build their last Convertible. the Cadillac Eldorado. They theorized that the American buying public didn't really want convertibles anymore and that production numbers were too small to bother with manufacturing "open air" cars. Boy were they wrong! Heinz Prechter seized the opportunity to custom make convertibles for most manufacturers and ASC (American Sunroof Corporation) exploded with orders and sales. It was a much smaller version of the 71-76 models which seated 4 adults. not 6 as were the 71-76 models So what exactly is it that makes us lust after those "Cars From Our Dreams?" Simple. it's the memories. the happy times. those great times from our youth and the freedom to go where we wanted. when we wanted. with whom we wanted. and in a car that was a ball to drive. It's where Johnny took Mary on their 1st date! It's so easy to spot a "Car From Our Dreams" on our highways today. just look for someone motoring down the street with a huge grin on their face. Today our hobby is pursued by guys and girls alike. it's just not a "guy" thing anymore and I think that's great. There are enough great memories to go around for everyone. How big is the car-collecting hobby? No one really knows for sure. However. there are several million cars that have been preserved or restored and our hobby is expanding. not shrinking. and with sixty million "Baby Boomers" with disposal income and spendable dollars out there. the prices will continue to escalate. The nice thing about our hobby today. as opposed to the wild speculation on vintage cars that occurred throughout the 1980's is that these cars are being driven and enjoyed. not just been stored away in warehouses and garages. So celebrate with us as we embark on the next fifty years and if you feel compelled to exclaim "Hubba Hubba" or a loud "Hooray" as we reminisce with these "Cars From Yesterday and Cars Of Our Dreams". it's perfectly acceptable!
