Description for Chevrolet Stylemaster 1947
OVERVIEW:This is a recently restored 1947 Chevrolet Stylemaster Sport Coupe, epresentative of a year in which Chevolet was America's number 1 auto producer. These models ran on a 116" wheelbase, nd weighed in at 3,060 lbs.
This particular car is a Canadian built example.Body by Fisher firewall data tag provides the following: Style # 47-1227, ody # S 2095, aint # 352. The overhead valve 6 cylinder engine has been upgraded to the larger and more reliable 261 ci., enerally rated at 148 horsepower. These engines were renowned as having extended life due to their full flow remote oil filter. This Chevy was acquired by its present family in 2011, nd is believed to have spent its entire life in the dry western climates of Alberta and Montana. Its solid and rust free body and undercarriage would certainly support that.
Their bill of sale shows that the style number was used as the VIN. No serial number plate has been found in the typical locations on the body, nd although it would also be stamped on the frame, hat stamping location has not been found as of yet. An avid vintage car enthusiast with prior restorations under his belt, he owner undertook its restoration soon after bringing it home and completed it in 2013. With extensive hours spent hands-on, e involved experienced club members as well as professional craftsmen and shops as required to restore the car to its roadworthy condition. Unfortunately due to illness, his was to be his last restoration and he did not have the opportunity to drive the car after its completion.
The odometer reads 0.3 miles, he distance it was driven around the block the day these pictures were taken at the end of May of this year. DRIVETRAIN:The upgraded 261 ci. engine has a full flow remote oil filter for longer life. This engine originally came in a 1960 Chev 3-ton truck, t was removed from the truck after only 2 years of farm use and with very low mileage, t which time a V8 was put in the truck.
The 261 engine was kept in good storage until acquired by the owner of the '47 Chev. The engine was cleaned up, hecked over, ound to be in good condition, nd was then installed in the car. It starts easily and sounds good with no unusual noises.
Some minor black smoke was detected upon start up, ut we feel this is due to the car sitting and not having been run in some time, nd should clear up with some use and a good run. The owner changed only those items required to make the 261 fit the car, hese included things like the oil pan, arb and manifolds. Most components on and around the engine appear period, uch as the distributor, enerator, tarter, echanical fuel pump, nd radiator, hich was re-cored.
More modern appearing items are the fan and belt, ad cap, ose clamps, ir cleaner, se of tie wraps, nd of course the full flow remote spin on oil filter.
New hood springs would help keep the hood in a wider open position.
Overall the engine bay is quite clean and tidy. The transmission is an original 3-speed with column shift. A new speedo cable is evident. The clutch dust cover is missing.
The rear axle ratio is believed to be the original 4.1:1. CHASSIS:This Chev rides on a 116" wheelbase. The frame does not appear to have ever been heavily rusted as there is no evidence of serious or heavy pitting.
The frame and all chassis components were cleaned and painted, nd today are simply dusty from its time stored in the garage. Chassis components appear to have been either restored or fully serviced as required to bring the car to a drivable and roadworthy condition. Suspension is coil spring in front, eaf springs in rear, ith Delco Lovejoy lever style shock absorbers, ll of which appear in good order. The right rear leaf spring still has its original sheathing, he left one does not and may have had a leaf replaced. New spring bushings evident. The exhaust system appears new with a correct period looking muffler.
Some minor oil weeping is visible from the rear diff gaskets.
Some dents in the gas tank. The tires are a matched set of 4 Firestone Deluxe Champion bias ply whitewall 6.00 x 16, n excellent condition but requiring a good cleaning of the whitewalls.
They are mounted on original steel wheels sporting new correct reproduction hubcaps.
There is no spare or jack with the car. BODY & PAINT: This dry western car was quite straight and rust free prior to restoration.
Overall the body panels and sheet metal are very straight. There is no evidence of collision damage, ust issues, r inferior body work. A minor adjustment of the hood fit is required as it has caused a paint chip on the right door behind the Stylemaster emblem. An inspection of the underside shows no evidence of the car ever having any rust out or rust repairs. The floor pans appear very solid, s do the inner and outer rocker panels and body mounts.
This is a very solid and rust free body and chassis.
The right rocker has a spot where the flange on the underside is bent, ikely from a poor jack placement at one time. The superior paint work on the car was professionally done, he quality is excellent and evident in all areas of prep, inish, nd shine. It is very smooth, as excellent shine and appears to have been nicely polished.
Apart from a couple of very small minor chips there are no visible blemishes in the finish. It is as nice in the door jambs as the exterior of the body. The paint is done in single stage urethane which gives the car an authentic looking finish, s opposed to the plastic look and high gloss depth of base/clear. The colors are solid on the light green body, etallic on the darker roof and wheels. The door sill running boards have new correct molded rubber mats. INTERIOR:The interior was completely redone in period appropriate materials and is quite comfortable. It is a combination of cloth with vinyl trim on the front seat and door panels. Door panels are stitched in original pattern, ith vinyl lower sections and kick panels for durability. New weatherstrips.
Door handles and window cranks all very nice with new escutcheon plates as well.
New shifter knob, ther knobs either new repro or good original. The dash and door garnish moldings are nicely painted. New glove box.
Nicely painted steering wheel with no cracks. New headliner in correct material and sun visors recovered. New dome light lens. The windlace matches the material used on seat backs. New closed loop carpeting selected with sewn on edge binding and matching floor mats.
New rubber pedal pads on brake, lutch, nd starter pedals. Possibly updated gas pedal and linkage. All glass is clear and in good condition.
New window seals, hannels, nd glass sweepers were installed. Some glue residue on rear quarter windows. The trunk is lined with new side panels, generic piece of carpet, nd has new weatherstrip.
Metal trunk pan was left original and gives indication of how solid and rust free the sheet metal was on this car. ELECTRICAL:The car's electrical system was upgraded to 12 volts.
As a master electrician by trade, he owner undertook the job of rewiring the car. New harnesses were made with modern plastic coated wire. Gauges are all in original condition, ith modern aftermarket oil pressure and amp gauges added below the dash.
The speedometer needle rests at the 10 mph reading, ccuracy unknown, nd the odometer has been rolled back to 0. The car has a Motorola in dash radio, oes not appear to be in working condition. There is no antenna.
The original clock is not in working order.
Super Deluxe heater with defrost, n working order. Vacuum wiper motor.
Aftermarket turn signal switch added to steering column.
Original glass front park and rear tail lamp lenses are good except for right front park lens cracked. BRIGHTWORK:Most stainless trim and chromed pot metal is in good original condition, etaining good finish and shine.
Bumpers and guards were rechromed and are very nice.
The stainless grille is nice but has a few minor dings. As it is stainless these would be easily repaired and polished out.
It is missing its hood emblem, ut reproductions are available. All pot metal items on the car are original and in overall good condition with very little minor pitting. All are good candidates for replating.
These items include the hood ornament, ood side Stylemaster emblems, oor handles and locks, runk hinges and handle. The vent window frames and dividers are in nice original condition.
Windshield wiper bases are good originals also, nd have new arms and blades.
There are new base pads for the door locks which have not been installed.
The stainless rocker moldings are dented and only in fair condition. New instrument faceplate overlays are included. SUMMARY:This Chevrolet coupe has been restored to a level that makes it an affordable car that is ready to be enjoyed, hile leaving opportunity to tinker over time and make the minor improvements and completions that would easily and inexpensively enhance it.
The super straight body and excellent paint work give it very respectable curb appeal. Some attention to the exterior stainless and chrome would bring those items in line with the quality of the body and paint.
The stronger and more reliable 261 ci. engine should provide many years of trouble free miles, nd make it a better performer on the road than it was when new back in '47. The car is at the point that it should be driven and enjoyed. Some minor adjustments and fine tuning may, r may not be required as the car is returned to active service, ut none should be serious and there should be no surprises with this car.
Parts availability for these old Chevs is excellent, nd won't break the bank.
Now, ith some time since the owners passing, is family has decided to make this Chev available to its next caretaker.
