Description for Chevrolet Impala 1960
Hi there! I am a 1960 Chevrolet 2DR Sport Coupe ~ 283ci ~ V8 ~ 2 Speed Power Glide with only 17,675 miles! I have no dents or dings and I'm smoke free! Yes, am almost brand new. I feel it and I look it, hanks to my owner Fran Knapp of Hoosick Falls, Y (a native of Bennington, ermont). This is my history... My story is an interesting one. First of all, think I am a female because my owner, ran, efers to me as "My Girl"!
I was assembled in Framingham, A in February of 1960 and shipped to Eddington Chevrolet/Cadillac on Main Street in Bennington, ermont where I was sold to my first owner. Neither Fran or I have any knowledge of who my first owner was or where I lived for my first six years. The earliest we date we know of is my last oil change and state inspection, hich was done in 1966 at Ed Reagan's Service Station located at 538 Main Street in Bennington (now known as Len Nichols & Sons).
The next thing we know is that I am back at Eddington Chevrolet, here I was shipped to in 1960. We think I might have been traded in, ut don't know for sure. I was stripped of all my chrome (I have alot of it), nd paint, nd had some primer put on me. I sat in a room next to Eddington's downstairs auto body shop with a few companions ~ a 1937 Chevrolet 4 dr, 1957 Chevrolet Belair 6 cyl. (owned by Bill Hogan's mother) and a 1964 Chevrolet Corvette.
Then, n 1980, he new owners of the Chevrolet dealership, ill Hogan (Anderson-Gallagher), ecided to take me to the 14th annual Bennington (VT) Car Show & Flea Market being held at The Bennington Airport. I just sat there looking old and tired. This is a special place, ecause it's where I met Fran!
I had a few lookers over those couple of days. I distinctly remember Fran looking me over very well ~ top to bottom, nside & out and saying to me "I could love you and make you look beautiful again"!! You see, hen Fran was in high school, e had my big sister ~
she was a 1960 Chevrolet Convertible ~ 348 ~ V8 ~ 3 deuces ~ 4 speed transmission w/chrome reverse wheels and two 1957 Ford driveshafts that he cut and installed for tailpipes! He did this at auto shop at Mount Anthony Union High School in 1968.
He graduated, ent on his honeymoon and then rushed his wife to the hospital to have his oldest daughter...all this with my big sister (you remember from the previous paragraph ~ 1960, onvertible, 48, tc!!) by his side. He really loved that girl (car)!
So, ou see, ran really could love me but he couldn't afford me right then. His wife was pregnant and they wanted $1800 (a firm price) for me.
Nobody bought me at the car show, o back I went, nto the same building where I had been sitting for the past 14 years. Then, o & behold, ran heard that the building had to be emptied and instantly went there, ought me and drove me to my new home ~ his home that was five miles away in East Hoosick, Y. There, e kept me warm & dry. He reassured me that someday he would make me look beautiful and brand new again!
Every now & then, ran would get in and sit behind my steering wheel. He kept reassuring me that the day was coming when he would start working on me himself. He got in & out so many times that he wore out my driver's seat bottom!!
Thirty years later, e kept his promise to me. His excuse for not starting to work on me sooner was that he wanted to practice on other cars first in order to do a good job on me. After running his own Auto Collision Business for many years and doing thousands of repair & paint jobs, e finally had time to make me beautiful again. Yes, e had to retire before he could fix me, lthough he still couldn't keep the customers from coming to get their cars fixed!
It took Fran a good year to get me back to new again...evenings, eekends, tc., ut it was the most fun he ever had doing a body/restoration job. Even though it took a little over a year, hings went smooth. All the while (30 years), ran kept telling me that we would be at the Bennington Car Show one day!
Well, inally, hat day is here ~ September 15, 012!! Fran is super excited and so am I! This is the pinnacle of his career...his lifelong dream...to make me look beautiful again. He also told me that someday we will have to part ways because human beings pass away but beautiful cars last forever when someone loves them & cares for them like Fran has done for me all of these many years!
Thanks for listening to our story. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we have enjoyed telling it to you! Maybe you'll be lucky enough to find yourself a "Girl" like me that you can love & make beautiful again...
I also forgot to mention that I have brand new Coker wide whitewall tires, nd I have been stored inside since 1966!
On Sep-25-15 at 12:06:16 PDT, eller added the following information:My people added a new photo of the Original VT inspection sticker from 1966 when I was last registered in VT. When Fran bought me, he front of the inspection sticker showed that I had 16,000 miles!
Some additional notes that Fran thought would be relevant: I ride, rive & perform the same way I did in 1966. My underside is untouched & only my rear brake line & wheel cyls have been replaced. All of my brake shoes are original!
