Description for Chevrolet El Camino 1978
An original Black Knight El Camino originally sold by Cross Motors of Ulysses KS (have copy of dealer invoice and original build sheet). Car was made in the Kansas City plant. A Kansas title shows Robert and Judy Regehr purchased the vehicle 2/09/79. I bought it from their nephew who inherited it but never drove it. It had been parked in a farm yard near Hutchison KS for unknown number of years after one cylinder of the 305 V-8 lost compression. I hauled the car to East Texas, eplaced the 305 two barrel engine with a Chevrolet Crate 4 bolt main engine, high rise Edelbrock manifold and Edelbrock 650 carb. Motor was installed correctly by certified mechanic with new water-pump, oses, tc. The air conditioning system is complete but has not been recharged. Heater and fan work fine. Transmission shifts well and was only serviced. Brakes were gone through, ew shocks (air in the rear) and a muffler installed on the single tailpipe. Vehicle then went to body shop for a new windshield, ash cover, paint job, raphics and bed liner. Rocker panels were both replaced where sand had drifted and rotted them -rest of the body is solid and had no major dents. Some interior trim, oor and window seals, ew headliner and visors were installed. Carpet, oor panels, torage compartment rug and seat are original. Carpet is acceptable; seat has several small cigarette ash burns. Owners manual, pare tire and original jack are included. The interior has faded from sun light over the years but is in pretty good shape - have factory color paint which could be used to brighten things. I have complete set of aftermarket hubcaps which have not been installed. Vehicle is currently inspected and registered - starts easily and drives very well. I am not aware of anything it needs other than the AC charged. This Black Knight is located just off I-20 about 60 miles east of Dallas TX near Canton TX.From what I can learn, he Black Knight was produced only until mid-1978. A lawsuit over the name caused GM to drop the Black Knight and cars in later years were called Royal Knights. The car was also listed as a SS on the build sheet. Reportedly only 1200 Black Knights were built. After the line was discontinued some supposedly had the decals removed and were sold as SS's.
Bought my first El Camino in 1978 (didn't know about Black Knights then). Have owned More then 20 El Caminos since then - five of my kids had one as first vehicle. Have been searching for a Black Knight for 30 years. Lucked onto two of them near Wichita KS. couple years ago. I am starting to redo the second Black Knight and will keep it along with my 1979 GMC Diablo.
