Inspection Comments
1969 Corvette Coupe, VIN #194379S720218
The car is presented as follows: 69 Corvette, L46 optioned vehicle with 350 cubic inch engine with 350 horse power, in excellent condition with A/C, power steering, power brakes, power windows, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, removable rear window, 4-speed transmission, T-Tops and pop-out rear window. The vehicle is finished in Daytona Yellow with contrasting Black interior.
Measurements of Authenticity:
VIN: In 1969, the VIN Plate was affixed to the inner vertical surface of the left windshield pillar, visible through the windshield. The VIN number on this car is 194379S------ The serial number range for the 1969 Corvette model year was 194379S --- 700001-738762. Production totaled 38,762 Corvettes for the 1969 production year, of which, 22,129 were coupe bodies.
The sequence of numbers translates to:
1 = Chevrolet Division
94 = Corvette
37 = Coupe
9 = year-1969
S = Assembly Plant, St. Louis, Missouri
720218 = is the number in the production sequence of this car for the 1969 model year. This was the 20,218th Corvette built for the 1969 model year in a production run of 38,762. This car would have been produced in March 1969 at the St. Louis, Missouri Corvette Assembly Plant. Because of a labor strike at the assembly plant, 1969 was a lengthy production run that ran from September 1968 through December of 1969 with the 1970 starting production in January 1970. This is an L46 highly optioned vehicle as such it was equipped at the factory with a 350 cubic inch 350 horse power engine (12,846 units) and a 4-speed transmission (16,507 units) and air conditioning (11,859 units)
Body Tag:
The Trim tag is located on the driver side "A" pillar, just outside of the dash area. It shows:
H27 = Build date: which would place the build date as March 27, 1969.
984 = Paint, Daytona Yellow
2Q4 = Trim: Standard Black Vinyl
Engine Bay:
The engine is presented as a 350 cubic inch, 350 horse power and the transmission is presented at factory 4-speed, manual that, with the factory air conditioning fulfils the “HX” designation on the engine block. The engine build suffix of “V” shows that the engine was built in Flint, Michigan as a 350/350. The numerical code
for the date of build was too obliterated to confirm. However, I believe the code is 0210 (February 10, 1969). Given that the vehicle was produced in March, 1969 and allowing for shipping of the engine from the Flint, Michigan Assembly Plant and other parts, and the strike at the assembly plants, the date would fall at 7-weeks prior to assembly. The balance of the engine nomenclature which is designed to confirm the vehicle VIV number is also partially obliterated but the last three numbers are the correct “218”. This engine serial number and production ID is located and the front edges of the passenger side engine block, below the head and above the water pump.
The chrome Ignition shielding cover is installed. The engine has received some minor modifications; Edelbrock intake manifold and Holley 4-barrell carburetor and perhaps a modified camshaft. As you advised, Scott Whipple, at Corvette Care, is still sorting out the vacuum hoses for the cowl induction panel. The top of the frame horns, back to the transmission cross member, are rust free.
Exterior / Paint:
The vehicle has been repainted using the original color; Daytona Yellow. The paint quality is excellent and recent detailing brightened the yellow highlights. There are few imperfections in the exterior paint. I pointed those out to you during my visit; paint blemishes, rear bumper, rear body panel) However, those do not severally impact the value of the vehicle.
The panel fit between the doors and fenders and quarter panels is pretty even. The front face bars/chrome and stainless trim are in very good condition.
The tires are B.F. Goodrich, T/A radial size 255/60/R15. They are newer and do not show many miles. The wheels are rally, 3-piece wheel; center cap and beauty ring.
The back-up lamp lens are not fogged over. The balance of the lens and the front park lamps and rear tail lamp bezels are not pitted. The headlamp controls from within the driver’s compartment work appropriately. The stainless around the front windshield is in good condition. The bumper mounting brackets are in good condition. The spacing between the headlamp covers and front nose cap is even. The cast grilles are in good condition and not cracked or broken.
The door handles and lock mechanisms are in good condition and work appropriately. The gas cap cover is in good condition and the emblem is clear and not faded. The weather stripping is in good condition.
Interior:
The interior has been restored with newer upholstery. The console is in good condition and the interior chrome and stainless trim are like new. The seat backs are not damaged and the carpeting is like new.
The windshield and side door glass are clear. The sun visors are in good condition and the interior of the T-Tops is in good condition. The dash is in good condition and not faded or cracked. The rear window in removable.
The interior door jams are finished to match the exterior in quality and brightness. The doors open and close easily and have a solid sound. The door weather stripping is in very good condition. The mileage reflected on the odometer is 25,737.9 miles. As you advised the Ohio Title shows that mileage as original, however you believe that the odometer has turned over once.
The arm rests are in good condition and not torn or cracked. The steering wheel is hardened rubber and not teak. The door sill plates are in good condition.
Undercarriage:
The undercarriage shows signs of an earlier restoration. The frame shows no signs of rust. The upper frame rails are rust free and the bird cages appear to be rust free as well. The flooring is solid with no signs of damage or repair. The exhaust system is relatively new and the brake and gas lines appear to be newer. There are no weld marks or evidence of straightening or repair on the frame rails, cross members or flooring. I was unable to see or feel any rust along or above the side frame rails, cross members, trailing arms, or the “bird cage”. The strut support bracket and bushings are in good condition.
The rear spring spacers are not warped. The spare tire carrier, “clam shell” is solid. The heat shields are in place, as well as, the dust shields for the inner fenders. The cross member bushings are solid, as are the rear spring mounting brackets. The front valance and rear body panel are solid and undamaged. The rear body valance does not fit tight to the body panel and the right bumper is slightly out of alignment.
Driving Test: A driving test was not conducted during this inspection.
Appraisal
This car, as presented, would make an excellent driver and win countless awards at local car shows and cruise-ins. This vehicle does not need any restoration. Moreover, bringing the engine and electronics back to complete originality would be inexpensive; in replacing the intake manifold, Quadra-Jet carburetor, in dash radio, etc.
