Description for Chevrolet Chevelle 1970
This 1970 Chevelle was built at the Leeds plant in Kansas City, MO, the third week of August, 1969. It is the 673rd car built for 1970 Chevrolet models, which included El Camino, Malibu 2-door, Malibu 4-door, Malibu station wagon, Chevelle convertible, and Chevelle SS.It was originally delivered to Weeks' Chevrolet dealership in Hohenwald, Tennessee, where it remained in only two Tennessee counties for most of its life, which was largely spent on the drag strip. This car was drag raced until the motor failed, which was then replaced with a period-correct LS5 454.
At some point during this period, it was switched to an automatic transmission. The original clutch pedal was cut off and a metal piece was welded onto the brake pedal. The metal piece was removed from the brake pedal and the original clutch pedal was put back in the car when a Muncie 4-Speed was put back in it. That original clutch pedal and rubber boot came with the car and are pictured here. The original Z-Bar mount was still on the frame. The gauges had been replaced with classic instrument gauges; an original set of gauges were restored and put back in the car.
It underwent a thorough restoration 5 years ago, and has been kept garaged and immaculate since recently returning the car to a period-correct Muncie 4-speed transmission.
Through my research on this car, I traced back the owners (one deceased) and had several great conversations with them to learn the details about its history. To my knowledge, the build sheet has never been located.
*The last photo is of this car back in the early '70s, sent to me by the first owner's son.
