RARE 1971, CHEVROLET, NOVA, 2 DOOR, V-8, WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. THE CAR WAS RE-PAINTED (COTTONWOOD GREEN-FACTORY COLOR) AND HAD ALL BODY WORK DONE BEFORE I BOUGHT IT. IT SHOWS SS BADGES ON THE FRONT AND BACK AND THE STEERING WHEEL SHOWS THE SS LOGO AND LOOKS FACTORY ORIGINAL! WITH THE SS NOVA CARS IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO VERIFY ONE WAY OR THE OTHER WITHOUT A BUILD SHEET AS THEY MADE THEM IN SO MANY OPTION VARIATIONS. I HAVE NOT FOUND THE BUILD SHEET ANYWHERE IN MY TIME WITH THIS CAR. AFTER SEVERAL MONTHS OF RESEARCH AND TALKING TO SOME AVID NOVA OWNERS AND "EXPERTS" I HAVE COME TO TWO POSSIBLE CONCLUSIONS. EITHER THIS IS A BASE NOVA CAR ORDERED AS SHOWN WITH THE SS "TRIM" PACKAGE WITHOUT ANY PERFORMANCE UPGRADES OR IT WAS SIMPLY ADDED WHEN THE BODY WORK WAS DONE AND I WAS GIVEN A STORY WHEN I PURCHASED IT AND FINISHED IT. EITHER WAY WAY IT IS AN EXTREMELY CLEAN AND ALL ORIGINAL 1971 CHEVY NOVA 2 DOOR HARD TOP THAT RUNS AND DRIVES AND SOME WILL WANT TO TAKE THE CARE AND TURN IT INTO A TRUE "SS CLONE" OR "SS BIG BLOCK CLONE". EITHER WAY I FEEL THIS CAR IS PRICED BELOW ITS CURRENT MARKET VALUE AND ONLY GOING UP EVERY YEAR. THE CLEAR COAT SHOWS SOME ORANGE PEEL AS WELL AS SOME MINOR BUBBLES AND IS EXTREMELY NICE DRIVER QUALITY PLUS, BUT NOT A SHOW TROPHY WINNING QUALITY JOB. THE BODY LINES ALL LINE UP VERY WELL AND THE TRIM IS ALSO NICE, BUT THE FRONT BUMPER IN PARTICULAR COULD USE SOME MORE CENTERING UP. THE CAR HAS NEW TIRES, NEW WHEELS AND BEAUTY RINGS, RE-BUILT FACTORY CARB, NEW HOOD LOUVERS, NEW BATTERY, NEW BELTS, NEW PROFESSIONALLY COVERED AND INSTALLED SEAT COVERS AND CUSHIONING, NEW CARPET, NEW PACKAGE TRAY IN THE BACK, NEW DUAL EXHAUST, NEW RADIATOR WITH COOLANT FLUSH AND NEW THERMOSTAT, UNDERCOATED FLOORS, NEW FUEL PUMP, NEW WEATHER SEALS AND I'M SURE I MISSED SOME OTHER NEW THINGS. NO HOLES IN THE FLOORS, TRUNK, OR IN THE INNER FENDERS AND I DO BELIEVE THE FRONT DRIVERS PAN WAS REPLACED. THIS CAR WAS ORDERED IN ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI AND COMES WITH THE ORIGINAL PROTECTO-PLATE, EARLY INSURANCE AND MAINTENANCE PAPERWORK, AND A THICK FOLDER OF RECITES. THE SPARE IS IN THE REAR WITH NEW CARPET COVER AS WELL. THE CAR IS A LITTLE COLD NATURED AND HAS BEEN CHANGED TO A MODERN HEI DISTRIBUTOR FROM THE OLD POINTS SYSTEM SO THE TIMING MAY NEED PLAYED WITH JUST A LITTLE MORE AS WELL AS THE CHOKE AND CARB. ADJUSTED A LITTLE MORE. THIS IS A FACTORY AIR CONDITIONED CAR, BUT IT IS NOT CURRENTLY HOOKED TO THE BELT SYSTEM! ALL OTHER ORIGINAL A/C SYSTEM PARTS ARE STILL THERE. THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IS THE 2 SPEED POWERGLIDE AND THE SHIFTER IS ON THE COLUMN. THE ENGINE IS THE ORIGINAL 307 CUBIC INCH V-8. IT STARTS, RUNS, AND DRIVES, BUT HAS NOT BEEN ON ANY LONG DISTANCE TRIPS SENSE I HAVE OWNED IT. THE DASH HAS ONE CRACK AND THE GAUGE CLUSTER HAS A COUPLE AS WELL. THE BLINKERS ALL WORK PROPERLY, BUT THE DASH LEFT LIGHT DOES NOT COME ON BUT DOES CLICK AND WORK. THE ODOMETER AS WELL AS THE SPEED DOES NOT CURRENTLY WORK EITHER. THE AIR AND HEAT SELECTOR AND FAN SPEEDS WORK PROPERLY SO YOU HAVE GOOD HEAT AND DEFROST. UNDER THE CAR YOU CAN SEE SOME LEAKING FLUIDS ON THE OIL PAN AND TRANSMISSION PAN AREA AS NEITHER SEAL HAS BEEN REPLACED. THE ODOMETER SHOWS 85,000 MILES, BUT AS MENTIONED IS NOT CURRENTLY WORKING. (THIS IS WHERE THE STORY GETS "DICEY AND CONFUSING"), THE FRONT BRAKES ARE THE FINNED DRUM BRAKES. I WAS TOLD FROM THE SECOND OWNER THAT IT WAS A TRUE SS CAR WHEN I PURCHASED IT. SHE WAS IN HER LATE 60s OR SO AND WAS AT THE SALE TO WATCH THE CAR SELL. IT WAS IN FACT PRODUCED IN EARLY 1971 AND ALL 1970 SS CARS WERE REQUIRED TO HAVE FRONT FINNED DRUM BRAKES AS THIS ONE DOES. I WAS TOLD THE ORIGINAL OWNER ORDERED IT EXACTLY AS SHE WANTED IT AND SHE WANTED THE BENCH SEAT, 2 SPEED ON THE COLUMN AND FINNED DRUM FRONT BRAKES (IN HER WORDS.... SHE DIDN'T WANT HER LIFE TO BE THE GINNY PIG WHEN IT CAME TO BRAKES ON HER CAR).THE REAR LEAF SPRING SET-UP IS THE MONO LEAF SPRINGS AND IT HAS THE 10 BOLT REAR END. I DO NOT KNOW THE COMPLETE HISTORY OR AUTHENTICITY OF THE CAR AND WANT TO MAKE IT VERY CLEAR!! THIS IS THE STORY I WAS GIVEN..... IS IT JUST A STORY.... BY THE OPTIONS YES, BUT ACCORDING TO CHEVROLET THEMSELVES IT WAS "POSSIBLE" AT THAT TIME FOR THE RIGHT PRICE, BUT WITH NO BUILD SHEET I HAVE NOTHING..... SO HERE WE ARE ONCE AGAIN. AS FAR AS THE CAR ITSELF... I HAVE CHECKED THE BODY PANELS WITH A MAGNET AND IT STICKS THROUGHOUT SO I FEEL THERE IS SOME BODY FILLER SMOOTHING AS YOU CAN SEE SOME ON THE INNER FENDER WHEEL WELL CORNERS BUT THE MAGNET DOES STICK. MY RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT THE SS COULD POSSIBLY BE PURCHASED AS SIMPLY A "TRIM PACKAGE" ON A BASE MODEL OR COULD BE ORDERED IN ALMOST ANY CONFIGURATION YOU WANTED AND OFFER ALMOST ANYTHING YOU WANTED AT ALL WHEREAS THE GENERAL CONCENSUS IN THE NOVA OWNERS COMMUNITY IS THAT IT MUST HAVE FRONT DISK BRAKES AND MULTI-LEAF REAR SPRINGS AS WELL AS A MINIMUM 350 CUBIC INCH ENGINE! THIS CAR IN FACT HAS NONE OF THOSE... I'M NOT TRYING TO SELL A COUPE AS A GUARANTEED SS CAR. ALL I HAVE TO SHOW AUTHENTICITY OF THE SS IS THE WORD OF THE PREVIOUS OWNER AND A NICE CLEAN CAR WITH MATCHING NUMBERS THAT RUNS AND DRIVES. I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH ONLINE AND WILL FIND ANYTHING FROM, "THEY CAN BE ORDERED ANY WAY YOU WANTED THEM" TO, "ONLY A 350 AND DISK BRAKES IN THE FRONT", SO AT THIS POINT ALL I CAN SAY WITH CERTAINTY IS THAT I AM NOT AN EXPERT AND IT IS EXTREMELY HARD TO VERIFY ANYTHING WITHOUT A BUILD SHEET ON THESE. I HAVE EVEN CALLED CHEVROLET DEALERS AND ASKED THEM TO GET THE SAME EXACT ANSWERS! I'M TRYING MY BEST TO DESCRIBE WHAT I CAN SEE ON THE CAR THAT WOULD BE IMPORTANT TO ME. I HAVE BEEN DOING E-BAY FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND TRY MY ABSOLUTE BEST TO BE COMPLETELY HONEST WITH WHAT I SELL, BUT TYPICALLY DO NOT SELL CARS ON HER. ESPECIALLY NOT VINTAGE COLLECTOR AGE VEHICLES. THIS PURCHASE WAS TO SOOTH MY WANT FOR A 1971-1973 MUSTANG MACH 1 AND IT JUST WONT DO FOR ME. THIS COULD VERY EASILY BE MADE INTO A BIG BLOCK 396 SS CLONE CAR THAT WOULD BE WORTH DOUBLE TO TRIPLE THE ASKING PRICE WITH ONLY A MOTOR AND TRANSMISSION SWAP THAT WOULD ALSO REQUIRE THE FRONT POWER BRAKE CONVERSION FOR STOPPING POWER AND HEAVIER REAR SPRINGS!
