Description for Chevrolet El Camino 1968
With the handsome good looks of a Chevelle and the utility of a pickup, the El Camino offers the best of both worlds: performance and practicality. This 1968 Chevrolet El Camino has been built to further blur the lines that separate vehicles: performance, great looks, and comfort. The bodywork is nicely finished and the workmanship is shown to great effect thanks to the beautiful and sinister black paint, which looks just about right on this racy truck/car.... These vehicles typically led harder lives than your average Chevelle, and finding a clean one, let alone investing enough to bring it to this condition, is tough. Gaps are good and a lot of time was invested in getting the body panels this straight when it was repainted a few years ago, and there's very little wear and tear beyond a few minor flaws here and there visible only upon very close inspection. The bed is protected by a spray-in bedliner that was neatly installed and flows nicely with the shiny black finish of the body, but also means the bed is best used as the world's biggest trunk that can handle any material you throw at it. Trim is bright and well maintained, with good chrome on the bumpers, a stock grille replete with an "SS 396" badge, and the trim around the bed is very nice, with no obvious dings or damage from use. A tow hitch and shiny exhaust tips point out from behind the rear bumper, and the bright alloy wheels finish the look of this UTE with a bang. The red-and-black interior is in great shape too and features a pair of neatly upholstered red buckets that fit neatly inside the roomy cabin. The plus black carpets, red headliner, and red door panels are reproduction pieces that look good and fit right, and the bucket seats make it feel spacious in the cab. A custom center console is a great option and houses a horseshoe shifter that manages the TH350 automatic transmission below. All the factory gauges were replaced with white-faced Auto Meter units inside the dash, and the 3-spoke steering wheel is mounted atop a tilt column. Cold R134a A/C is a nice touch in a car that's built to cruise, and you also get a Kenwood AM/FM/CD/AUX stereo head unit that really fills the small cabin with good sound. This El Camino has all the right stuff to make a first-rate hobby car. Under the hood of this Elky is a wicked strong 396 cubic inch V8, which snaps immediately to attention and runs extremely well. It's got the usual upgrades including an Edelbrock intake manifold, Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor, an HEI ignition, and long-tube headers to help build torque. The engine bay is extremely sanitary and clean, with a lot of dress-up items such as those big orange Chevrolet valve covers, the chrome open-element air cleaner, as well as the orange painted block that really pops out from in between the black inner fenders. The transmission is a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission, plenty capable to handle all the power, and it snaps through the gears with authority. There's a newer Flowmaster-style dual exhaust system that gives it a great performance sound and the 10-bolt rear end feels like it has street-friendly gears inside. Handsome polished Billet Specialties wheels stuff the wheel wells and look awesome, wearing big 225/60/16 front and 235/60/16 rear Goodyear radials. With a great deal of money spent on the restoration, this is a good, clean El Camino that's ready to enjoy. Turn on the A/C, crank up your favorite tunes, and enjoy the ride.
