Description for Chevrolet Stylemaster 1947
1947 Chevrolet Stylemaster
After nearly four war years in which no civilian passenger cars had been produced, Detroit could have sold anything with wheels that went round and round. Chevrolet, along with most of its competitors, shrewdly elected to serve up existing models. After all, the paid-for factory tooling was already in place, and the demand for new cars was unprecedented.
For consignment is an older, but still holding up restoration (1980) that was done to a very high standard, even taking a VCCA Junior, Senior, and Preservation Standards awards. And we are off...
Exterior
Chevrolet was kicking some styling butt in 1947 and looking at the sleek forward-facing lines of this car it could be moving, but it's standing still. Even so it is still moving...our eye visually, from the swept forward "B" pillar to its voluptuous fenders and nicely down curved "boot" this car just drips late 40's styling. The tall standing knobby hood sits proudly above a chromed grille which gets larger as it descends to the bumper. The back of the car just uses curved lines to their max with not a straight line seen anywhere, even the taillights. These straight steel panels, laser gaps, and solid construction, are sprayed with a tan and sporting brown on the top. The paint job is showing some age with cracking and crazing areas particularly on the fenders.
Interior
Yards of tan felt cover seating, and door panels. Door panels make use of beautiful grained wood for the interior window surrounds. Perfectly chromed door handles and cranks are framed with cream bakelite bezels, and present very nicely. Looking at the very utilitarian but functional dash, we see an alignment of rectangular gauges to drivers right, and a speedo on the left which is attached to wonderful horizontal chromed speaker frame and ending on the other side in a clock. Cream Bakelite knobs are noted and have a beautifully aged color which contrasts to the dark tan metal paint sprayed dash. A must note, is that the cloth seating with its beautifully curved backs highlighted in dark piping, as well as the warm gray ribbed carpeting, with built in floor mats, is just nearly perfect. Headliner is showing some staining (may be from glue, may be water?). Steering wheel, and shift lever knob are in good condition. Also need to give a shout out to the trunk area covered in ribbed rubber panels. In the driver's door frame their appears to be a repair which was structural in nature, but with this repair, it is now structurally sound.
Drivetrain
The 216ci inline 6-cylinder engine, has been reworked, and when re assembled utilized a chromed valve cover and Fenton Headers which translate to a true dual exhaust. A 1-barrel carburetor feeds the engine, and it is attached to a 3-speed manual transmission.
Undercarriage
Undercoating shows very clean, with rust free frame, rockers, floor pans and toe kick panels. A stainless? piping snakes its way rearward in the form of dual exhaust, and drum brakes are seen all around.
All around a nearly 30-year-old restoration still holding its own. For perfection, some exterior work on the paint would be appropriate, however all in all it presents nicely.
