Description for Chevrolet IROC Camaro 1986
1986 Chevrolet IROC Camaro
A concept created partially by Roger Penske, the International Race of Champions or IROC would pit all-star drivers from numerous venues of racing, against each other in similarly prepared cars. Excepting the first season, those cars were provided by Chevrolet, and they chose to feature the Camaro.
For consignment, a graduation present for their daughter which was nixed at the last minute on the drive home from the dealer, when this car was deemed too powerful for a child right out of high school to be behind the wheel of. So, it was put into the garage and became this 6,305 original mile time capsule now here at Classic Auto Mall
Exterior
All original white paint looking clean and pristine with just a little bit of off-color fading on the Duraflex Bumpers, but one needs to look closely. With this package there are dual louvered air intakes which are flush with the hood metal, and these present in black. A black trim line is just above the rockers and wraps entirely around the car. Just above this on the doors are IROC Z badges in fadeout gold. A large curved glass greenhouse makes its way back to the trunk which has a small spoiler atop. 5 spoke mag wheels with gold inserts are seen on all 4 corners. The tires are new; however, the originals are available if you want them.
Interior
Still with just a hint of showroom smell upon a swing of the doors, angled stitched broadcloth is over gold carpeting, and like new black door handles, pulls and power buttons are all there. The passenger seating is all covered in tan cloth broadcloth, and it does not show any marks or tears. A contrasting center console races up to the dash, and houses a storage compartment, power window and trunk toggles and the shift lever. As it meets the dash and moves upward, we see blue LCD radio display, equalizer buttons, and a cassette player. This section makes way up to the dash front where square and rectangle design takes over, all complete with round analog gauges. Gold carpeting is like new and covers all the floors and rear storage. Seen in the storage area are the factory floor mats still in their unopened plastic wrappers. Consigner states that a new headliner was recently installed.
Drivetrain
Very slight patina lightly glazes the engine bay which within sits the numbers matching 305ci HO V8. It is fed by electronic fuel injection, and has a 700R4 4-speed automatic tranny, with a 10 bolt, 3.23 posi rear.
Undercarriage
Looking just as one expect from a 6,300 mile car that has been in a garage for the past 33 years. Some surface rust, but otherwise a few splatters as it was driven now and then just to keep everything supple and working. Independent coil spring suspension is on front, and torque arm suspension is on the rear. Power disc brakes for the front, and power drums for the rear, and the original exhaust is present.
Drive-Ability
I had to sit in this car for a while just to be sure everything was functioning, and we can check that off the list. The car started right up and took off like a rocket. I can understand why you would not want your teenager behind the wheel, but I don't agree with it! It ran smoothly, with a nice ride, and I noticed a bit of hesitation around 1000 RPM in all gears which may be due to old fuel. Once it got by that 1K mark it ran great and had awesome acceleration.
A true time capsule, a mere 6,305 miles, and kept away from their recently graduated teen, now adult, but certainly not totally ignored. New tires and a new headliner otherwise we are totally original on this car. When you get this car, you may have to change the break in oil!
