Description for Chevrolet Corvette 1965

1965 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster

In 1951 a group of Harley Earl's "Special Projects" crew began work on a GM sports car. Bob McLean designed a general layout for the car which was originally code named, "Opel." William Durant, the founder of GM, said a wallpaper pattern he saw in a Paris hotel in 1928 inspired the bow tie logo. Supposedly, he ripped off a small piece of it and brought it back to Detroit. Myron Scott, at the time Chevrolet's Chief photographer, is credited with coming up with the Corvette name, drawing from the small, fast warships of the "Corvette" class.

A funny thing happened at the repair shop...In 1999 after purchasing the car, the previous owner saw the rear of the car was sagging, so he took it to a repair shop. Once there it was diagnosed with a broken frame mount. It was fixed, but during this process it was realized the frame was bent. So, they decided to straighten the frame. However, when they did this, they cracked the fiberglass body. Long story short, it was decided to do a full frame off restoration, which led to years of delays etc. The current consigner finished the work, put the car all back together and now we have a beautifully completely restored 1965 version of the Corvette...all from a broken frame mount!

Exterior
Finishing up with a total stripping of the topcoat and base coat, then sanded down, and primed and blocked 3 times. Topcoat was sprayed and it was cut and buffed, and the results are truly eye popping. Bathed in perfect red there are only minor faults on this finish, and it is miles deep. Chrome and trim has been meticulously restored and badging is all perfect and there. A white canvas convertible top is on and it shows very little wear. On back there is a clear plastic rear window, and top moves up and down very easily. On all 4 corners we see 15-inch turbine style wheels with knockoff hubs.

Interior
Righteous, Righteous, Righteous for this interior with showroom looking door panels covered in stunning red and spattered with perfect chrome, you are stepping into greatness. Slipping inside we are now in red heaven, with the dual cowl dash in front one side sporting the instrument cluster which is very clean and has a black surround. Under the passenger cowl is the glovebox which is aluminum faced and has a pristine black surround. A crack free padded dash top frames all this from above. Sitting in a perfect sea of red carpet, are the 2 bomber style vinyl buckets covered in red. There is nary even a fold on these chairs. Running up the center is a console in red and black, housing the chromed ball topped shift lever wrapped in a leather boot. A red V pillar rises vertically from this console and meets the cowls. This pillar has the vertical on its side radio which is now digital and sports a cassette player. Directly above the radio are some knobs and a working clock.

Drivetrain
A flip of the hood and with this condition of the orange blocked and intake numbers matching 327ci V8, I can hear the showroom salesman droning on about how powerful this car is and how much fun it is to drive. This beautifully restored mill is topped with the correct Carter 4-barrel carb and correct #3844459 intake. This wears a chromed top hat for the air cleaner housing. A 4-speed Muncie M20 manual transmission is on back and is stamped P0610, manufactured June 10th, 1964/65, and has a wide ratio.

Undercarriage
As expected with all the work that went into the original frame mount, frame straightening, removal of body and engine, sandblasted then all put meticulously back together it is all correct. Nice jet black framing, shiny dual exhaust, and of course no rust this car is ready to roll, right into a show. Independent coil springs for the front and transverse leaf springs for the rear provide the ride, and 4-wheel disc brakes are noted.

Drive-Ability
Just as the consigner stated that even after sitting for 14 years, they oiled everything, and this car started right up. It did the same for us, and we were off to the test track. We drove this car with kid gloves due to its condition, but it handled nicely, drives beautifully, and was a nice riding car.

If you are in the market for a really nice Sting Ray hidden headlight convertible in just great condition, then look no further. This car can easily win shows, or any contest that includes the word GO!
