This 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS396 is the one to own if performance and style are your goal. Admit it. if you were building your own F-body. this is how it would look. You know all about the difficulties in making black cars look right. and this car totally nails it. For a Tuxedo Black car that's been driven. it's really impressive. The finish is deep. dark. and glossy and two-stage urethane gives it that hard shine that really stands out. A white stinger strip was one of the three choices in 1968 and probably the one that is seen the least. and against the black paint it makes for a dramatic look. Panel fit is quite good overall and it's nice to see a stock hood with the velocity stack inserts simply because there's no cowl induction hood made that's cooler. A chin spoiler and traditional ducktail out back add to the SS's attitude and proper badging has been added. including the vaunted '396' emblems on the front fenders. Nice chrome glitters against the black paint and the black vinyl roof fits well and uses original materials for a factory look. On a black car. it's hard to beat a red interior and the Camaro's upscale buckets and console make this one feel more like a gentleman's hot rod than a street brawler. The seats have a comfortable. inviting look that's far more appealing than the hard vinyl reproduction covers you see in so many cars. and the slightly fatter than stock steering wheel actually matches the woodgraining on the dash and console pretty well. The original interior was gold. so everything in the car that's now red is brand new. and that's a long list of stuff. This car also includes a full array of instruments. including a tick-tock-tach and white-faced auxiliary gauges on the console. as well as relatively rare power windows. At some point. a Pioneer AM/FM/cassette head unit found its way into the dash. although it's important to note that nothing was hacked up to get it there. There's also a correctly outfitted trunk with a new mat. full-sized spare with cover. and a complete jack assembly. The 396 cubic inch V8 under the hood provides impressive motivation for the super clean Camaro. It looks fairly stock. although sharp-eyed viewers will note the Edelbrock intake manifold. Holley carburetor. Accel distributor. and long-tube headers. but they stay in the background and don't really distract from the factory look. Chevy Orange paint. chrome valve covers. and some reproduction decals anchor a tidy engine bay. which also offers power steering and brakes to make the heavy big block less of a burden. A 4-speed manual transmission really is the enthusiast's choice for putting power to the ground. and there's a sturdy 12-bolt rear end to back it up. The exhaust has a nice rumble to it but not so aggressive that it gives you a headache on long trips and while the underside isn't detailed for show. it means that you can drive without worries just about anywhere. Correct Rally wheels with Goodyear white-letter radials finish the look and fill the fenders just right. Is this a car you've dreamed of? It's got all the right ingredients and drives superbly. and a few unusual options make it stand out in a crowd.
