Description for Chevrolet Other 1961
Thank you for taking a look at my '61 Biscayne. This is a car that I've owned since January 2002 after purchasing it sight-unseen from a guy in Sacramento CA while I was overseas on a military tour of duty in Japan. This '61 and another '61 Belair flat-top tudor sat side by side in a field for decades without any attention before being rescued. This '61 was a black-plate California car when I bought it and the plates are still in my possession. At the time I purchased the car I believe I was the second possibly third registered owner as the car was originally owned by the state of California as a municipal vehicle. There was originally a riveted badge on the driver's front fender which was gone when I bought it.
The overall condition that you see the car in minus the driveline and rolling stock it sets upon is largely the way the car was originally found. I bought this tudor as I was unable to locate/afford a coupe (bubbletop) and thought in time that I would restore this one to original.So--back in 2010 I finally had some money and with help from my father began building the car into what you see it as now. In 2010 an '80's Suburban 454 was loaded into the engine bay along with an '85 Camaro 700R4 Trans that was setback a couple inches from where the original 235 6-cylinder and 3-speed was situated. Also sourced was a '64 P-Case 3.31geard posi center section for the original rear end. Slightly modified Hooker headers are in place with 3" exhaust starting at the collectors and running back to 40-Series Flowmaster mufflers which dump just forward of the rear axle. (Sounds amazing.....) New brakes and front end components were fitted and 15x4" American Racing Torq Thrust wheels were put up front with some large white wall front runner bias ply tires. Out back the drums were retained as well and some discontinued Radir Cheater Slicks were fitted to 8" GM-corporate Impala rims from the early '70's. (The tires and wheels are what make this car what it is...) The Radir Slicks are in good shape but are starting to show some age in the sidewalls. To complete the trans to rear connection a brand new Inland Empire heavy duty 2-piece driveshaft was fabricated and installed with a billet aluminum center support bearing. The weak point in this driveline is only the P-Case at this point. A new 18-gallon fuel tank is mounted in the original location with an old-school Fram fuel filter setup and a high-volume mechanical fuel pump up front.
Also up front is an aluminum radiator and electric fan which keeps the big block cooled while a vintage Accel Dual-Point distributor and matching coil keep things in time. A set of later manufacture Stewart Warner gauges were mounted below the dash to keep track of voltage oil pressure and water temp.
After I took possession of the car from my father I got it into driving condition and after the Holley 750 ran too rich for too long and flooded the engine a few times the oil thinned out and I spun a rod bearing. I piled up a ton of machine receipts and new parts as the 454 was rebuilt and '71 LS6 GM Cast cylinder heads (rectangular port) were located which matched the L88 intake (original casting from '69). I found some original Edelbrock cast aluminum finned valve covers which now have the oil drippers machined off of due to the rocker assemblies being too tall for them to remain in place.The engine was broken in on a Dyno but was not set to pull any numbers and is estimated to be in the 450hp range as it was built to be driven on the street so the cam is not to radical and compression is pump-gas friendly. A new cam and all other parts aside from the crankshaft were replaced with new components. I have over $6500.00 in receipts for the engine alone. Following completion of the engine I smoked the 700R4 transmission and destroyed a torque converter. The transmission was rebuilt over the past 6 weeks with a TCI Breakaway 2600 Stall torque converter and a better cooling setup which includes only an auxiliary cooler and thermostatically controlled switch for an electric cooling fan.
The car was just test driven during the 2015 Bourbon Blitzkrieg Run which included driving from my home in Union Grove WI to the Lexington and Lousiville Kentucky area which totaled approximately 1000 miles +. The car suffered no breakdowns and had no issues whatsoever. The automatic trans is shifted "blind" with the original 3-speedcolum shifter and the clutchpedal is suspended in place by a spring. Yessssss.. This car was driven on the freeway averaging speeds of approximately 80mph. The trans is setup with a Bowtie Overdrives 4th Gear lockup solenoid and with the low rear end gearing keeps this car moving very fast on the open roads. This car was nearly a no-option sedan however it does have a rear seat and heater. No radio No power brakes No power steering and did I mention the brakes are operated from a single-circuit master cylinder still? Just keep that in mind--this car is very raw in its aesthetic.Please note--the "patina" on the car is completely "mother-nature" created and nothing has been faked here. You can file your nails on the surface rust and friends and little kids can rub against it at the shows and you can smile at their enjoyment. The seats are largely un-upholstered and the rear seat is just bare springs. The original rubber floor covering (never had carpet in these stripped down sedans) is largely deteriorated. The floor pans in the front are in very fair condition with a couple thin spots and the rear floors have been patched and are unfinished. The trunk well is of Swiss-design (modeled after their cheese) and a new trunk well can be provided to the new owner. Please note the passenger door glass channel was repaired at one time and is in need of addressing as the glass will drop out of the channel IF notin a fully raised or lowered position. Also the nylon wheels on the raise/lower assembly are deteriorated. The lower body rocker trim (aluminum) pieces are available but were removed as one of them is in very bad shape from being scuffed years ago. I have the original one-piece rear bumper and bumperguardswhich were re-chromed and I have no intention of puttingthe bumper back on the vehicle in its current state. This vehicle is entirely legal is insured and registered in Illinois and I drive it regularly. The only "legal" issues is that the front window has a crack in it which only impedes the passenger view of the road. (I do have a brand new front tinted top windshield which I have not installed either). Also-the windshield wiper blades are absent (just to remind you to get home before the rain comes down). Otherwise everything works on this car.
There are NO reverse lights as this Biscayne only had the dummy red lenses mounted on the inboard area of the trunk lid. You get brake lights tails and turn signals. I have all brand new flat glass for the car as well which I had cut approximately 5 years ago by a very reputable glass cutter. Again--on the topic of the interior the front door panels are non-existent although I do have the top rails for the panels should they be needed for new panels. The front seat upholstery is usually covered by a blanket. "Safety Equipment" consists of vintage aircraft latch-type seatbelts which are anchored to the floorpan with eye-bolts. At large the new owner could potentially find themselves at the center of any car show should this car be sold. Its a wild vehicle that has not been drag-raced but has been known to leave some rubber on rural roads and at stop lights.

This is a feeler listing and if it sells I will surely regret it and my girlfriend will be upset as she loves this car. I however have other projects and plans to build a large garage for the other projects and this beautiful beast would help finance said construction. WARNING: This car is loud it rattles and occasionally will cause you to mash the gas pedal to smell the lovely scent of burning rubber. This car is not meant for kids or to be your "first" hotrod. I built this car with my favored appearance in mind as I feel that the '60's showed some of the best racing history for drag racers and the '61 Chevy is my favorite year/model of GM vehicles. I will certainly miss this car if it sells.
