Description for Chrysler Royal 1939

1939 Chrysler Royal Windsor Towne Coupe History of the car: Chrysler had redesigned all its car lines for 1939. Lower and more rounded in appearance than the ’38s. the new cars featured split windshields and headlights flared into the fenders. For Chrysler. DeSoto and Dodge. two versions of coupes were offered on the same basic body: one with fold-down seats and one without. This Chrysler Royal Windsor Towne Coupe has fold-down seats. To provide space for more comfort. Chrysler came up with an entirely new coupe body. one with a 16-inch-longer passenger compartment. Commonly called the “Hayes” coupe. the design actually came from Chrysler stylist Dean Clark. Bodies were manufactured by the Hayes Body Corp. of Grand Rapids. Michigan. To provide the additional room. the roof was lengthened and given an attractive bobbed “boat-tail” shape. with split rear window. Side windows gained more glass area and were trimmed with attractive chrome moldings Inside. a full-width seatback served double duty. In normal use it provided comfortable front-facing seating. When more cargo space was required. the cushion hinged upward and either or both of two lower cushions could be stowed behind it. Armrests at the sides concealed spacious bins Historian Jeff Godshall believes 1016 Hayes coupes were built in 1939. although there have been estimates slightly higher. Godshall breaks these down as 363 Dodges. 389 Chryslers of various descriptions and a mere 264 DeSotos. At the end of the year. the unique Hayes style faded away. never to return. This 1939 Chrysler Royal Windsor Towne Coupe was one of only 260 built in this style and was invited to the prestigious "Concourse de Elegance" at Meadowbrook Michigan as a car of "Special Interest". This was the pinnacle of Art Deco design in the auto industry. The car was purchased at an estate sale in 2007 and I completely restored the interior to original standards with all attention to the details. The exterior is not a new restoration because the paint is good. The front bumper was re-chromed and remaining chrome is in great condition. The undercarriage is in very good condition with new shocks all the way around. The 95hp inline 6 cylinder engine is original and does not burn any oil. Radio. speedometer. odometer and voltage regulator gauges all work. Fuel gauge does not work. New battery. Good clutch. brakes and tires. Glass is in good condition. The paint color is #8601 Sequoia Cream. So this car is simply road ready and ready to enjoy! Any questions call Norm at (586) 822-1658 between 9 am & 9 pm EST. Mileage 86. 85 Vin# C22CL1093
