Description for Chrysler Newport 1971

This is a well preserved running and driving 1971 Chrysler Newport Custom. I bought it from an estate in PA in 2009. The previous owner kept it garaged and entered it into local car shows and won awards with it. I don't know how long he had it or if he was the original owner. I don't think he was. That is all the previous history I know of the vehicle. The body on the car is very straight and accident free as far as I can tell. It had a repaint of the original color long before I owned it and it is fading now that I've had it outdoors for the past year. There is some rust here and there but nothing structural. The worst is on the driver side rear quarter panel and on the rear valance below the rear bumper. which is shown in the photos. There is also some bubbling under the vinyl below the rear window in a couple of spots. also shown in photos. The rest is surface rust on the bottom of the rockers. There's also small chips here and there in the paint and one long scratch on the passenger rear quarter panel that I have tried to show in a photo. It could probably be buffed out. I haven't tried. The interior is in excellent condition. Only a couple of tears in the driver seat as shown in the photos. The rest of the seats. door panels. dash. and headliner are nearly perfect. The carpet is original as well but faded. AM/FM stereo works and I have added an mp3/external audio adapter cable. Everything works on the car except for the heater blower when in Heat mode. I still get heat by using any other mode. AC. MAX. or DEFROST. as long as the AC compressor wire is unhooked. which I easily disconnect every winter. The AC works well. especially on the highway. but it does leak freon. so I recharge it (R134A) once in the summer and it usually lasts. Last thing is the windshield wipers won't park properly. You just have to shut them off at the right time. The windshield washer squirters work but don't quite spray properly. When I bought it the car had a 383 motor which I think was the original. I do have the build sheet for the car to check. The 383 didn't last long so I put a 440 motor from a 1977 motor home in it. The mileage on the motor home engine was approx 60K. When I did this I didn't replace some seals that were worn so it does leak some oil and tranny fluid. The car runs and drives fine but is not very quick. meaning it's slow to get up to speed. and if you stomp on the gas pedal. it doesn't get up and go. So if you're looking for a hot rod this car isn't it. just yet. It may just need the timing adjusted and/or the carb. I did the initial timing and carb settings myself and am not the best at it. I drive it as-is and it's ok. It made a 900 mile trip just a couple of months ago without any problems. I put a new set of tires on the car about 4 years ago and they don't have that many miles on them. The front tires are worn on the edges indicating the front end probably needs alignment. plus the steering is fairly loose so some front end work may need to be done. Nothing unusual for a car of it's age. *Please note that the first three photos of the car are about 5 years old and the paint has faded and/or oxidized some since then. I have not tried to wax or buff it to see if it will shine again. I have done my best to honestly and accurately describe the car in it's present condition. The car is sold as-is.
