I have tons of photos detailing the restoration of the body. Some are included in the link at the bottom of the listing. The body and tub were restored by a professional, see receipts for materials used. ALL rot was cut out and replaced. Battery area was replaced as well as some sections of the floors. The car was not terribly rusted at time of restoration, but any rot that existed was removed and replaced professionally. I rate the bodywork and paint a solid 8-8.5. You could buff it out some more if you wanted too....but it looks pretty awesome. According to the previous owner, the transmission was gone through but I do not have receipts showing this. The engine has excellent compression 150 PSI across the board...I assume engine was probably gone through as well. All electrical working except gas tank sending unit level indicator, license plate light (bulb is burned out), and one parking lamp bulb on driver rear is burned out. The engine bay was restored also but not to as high a standard as the body. The car runs and drives great.
I acquired this and finished putting it together as the previous owner had lost steam after the paint and bodywork were completed. I spent about $1000 on renewing the braking system (New: front calipers, front and rear hoses, master cylinder and rebuilt the rear wheel cylinders) For those of you who know these cars...this is a very expensive and crucial item to be completed on these. The front calipers are brand new but may need some more bleeding or something to get them working a little better....rear brakes work great. I also had the gas tank restored, installed a new water pump, new clutch slave and master cylinders and new carpet. I also purchased a VERY expensive CANVAS top, but have not installed it yet. I have had a car drop in my lap that I have been wanting for many years, so I have to let this one go in order to make it happen.
The car is nearly complete. The only items missing are the following: Drain tube for cowl. Antenna. Driver sun visor, Front bumper guards(I like it without them anyway), original jack, spare tire and rim, convertible top latches are there but broken (I advise fitting the earlier 67 type as the 67.5 ones were a one year only and are very expensive. The 67 and earlier ones work fine). One window crank escutcheon.
Items that are included, but not installed are shown in photos in the link at bottom of listing and are as follows: All exterior fender trim (most is kinda dented up, but the right person can restore them), trunk chrome trim, all emblems, windshield washer sprayer, seat belts, driver side mirror, very hard to find push plates for the convertible top. Hood trim chrome piece is in great shape. I am not a body person, so I did not want to mess anything up trying to install the trim on the car. I have the wipers...they are the originals, but the splines on them looked somewhat different from the splines on the motors...so I did not try and fit them....the wiper motor works fine though...I am just overly cautious. I looked online and the wipers match other wipers from 67.5. The rear trim vinyl covered piece that goes along the back of the top of the cockpit from the doors back. I did not want to mess the paint up trying to install it....but it fits like it should.
Only items not hooked up during assembly were heater hoses and HVAC controls. Heater core is there and all hoses are there, but they were not hooked up. The HVAC controls, wires/cables and supply hoses are there but the back sides where the controls/cables hook to all the flaps and valves are not hooked up. I am not good with HVAC system stuff so I am leaving that alone. Heater fan does work though.
New items purchased but not installed are: All door felts/chrome. The car has brand new tires. Here are the details:
BODY: Excellent condition. All bodywork done to a professional standard...I rate it a solid 8-8.5....I'm extremely critical, so keep that in mind. There is only one guy in this town of over 1 million I know of that can do 10 quality work. The doors need to be adjusted for perfect fit....and I would replace the hinge pins while you are at it. There has been some rubbing of the paint inside the door sill where they close...so this would need attending to. There is only one very small area at the bottom of one of the front fenders where there is evidence of some rust bubbling...I will have pics of this tomorrow. Otherwise the body is in very good condition and the paint looks awesome. It has been buffed once, but if you want perfection, there are a couple of areas that could be buffed more....but paint shines very nicely all over. Like I said, I am pretty picky/critical. Any rust/rot was cut out of floors and new metal welded back in with FULL SEAMS. The convertible top is old and shrunk, but I purchased a VERY expensive CANVAS top that just needs to be installed. These are very simple tops to install, but I am not a trim/body guy, so I am leaving that up to the next owner or a professional. Top frame is in good condition and functions properly. All glass is good.
ENGINE: Compression is 150 PSI across the board. She is a little cold natured....but once she is warmed up...she runs awesome. No smoke or leaks, all plugs burning evenly and a nice shade of tan. (see photos). I rebuilt the carbs and tuned them pretty well. I don't think you can get them musch better, but if you are a wizard...you may be able to tune them a little further....but they are working very well. New water pump and gas tank was restored professionally. I also added an electric fuel pump and bypassed the original mechanical unit. Much better performance for the SU carbs. The only thing I would do is install some new motor mounts. They wiggle around some at engine shutdown, but perform well during normal operation.
TRANSMISSION: Shifts and works great. Previous owner said it was gone through but I have no receipts to prove it. I have driven other roadsters.....this one has zero trans issues at all and shifts very well and very smooth, so I do tend to believe the previous owner. No leaks. New clutch master and slave cylinders and clutch slave rubber hose.
CHASSIS: New tires. Cooper 175/65-14 Weather-Master S/T 2. These are a snow type tire, but really make this thing ride nice and stable. I was hesitant to think how they would ride, but I was pleasantly surprised. Entire braking system replaced: New front calipers/pistons, New front and rear rubber brake hoses, rear wheel cylinders rebuilt, New master cylinder. All other chassis items are original to the car but holding up and performing as they should (bushings, etc..)
ELECTRICAL: Everything is working except gas gauge sending unit level indicator, license plate light and driver rear parking light.
INTERIOR: New carpet, new shift boot and E-Brake boot. The rest of the interior is original except for door panels, but driver quality. If you want to really finish this car off, I would spend about $600-$800 and you can get an entire interior panel kit that replaces all panels and vinyl trim. The window cranks need the clips to hold them on but they work the windows just fine.
WHAT WOULD I DO: The car runs and drives great. I would investigate the front brakes and see why they are not working as well as I feel they should. They are brand new...so it should be something pretty simple. Get the top installed and you can enjoy it as you improve on it. If you just want a cool driver...you got one. Or you can order a new interior kit and take this to the next level.
