Description for Datsun Other 1971
Up for sale is my custom. one of a kind 1971 Datsun 510 2 Door Wagon. If you are looking at this. you know the Datsun 510 is an iconic classic car with a cult following and it is the car that started the import tuner car scene. The 510s are highly sought after. Here's your chance to own a one of a kind 510. I first saw this wagon in an issue of the Dime Quarterly Magazine back in the 1990's. It was dreamed up and built by the renowned fabricator and auto body Guru. Tim Bridges. Tim is well know in the Datsun Community and he brought his dream of combining the iconic 2 door 510 with the added functionality of a wagon to life. (this picture shows the car when first completed 20+ years ago. ) Not an easy feat but Tim built this one right. The 2 door 510 has doors that are about 5" longer than the front doors on the 510 wagon. Sure it would have been easy to leave the shorter front wagon doors in place but it would not have looked like it came from the factory that way. Starting with a clean rust free wagon and a clean 2 door 510 donor car. Tim got to work. Wanting to build it like Datsun would have. Tim installed the longer doors from the 2 door along with the B pillars and front sections of the 2 door quarter panels. He skillfully grafted them to the rear section of the wagon quarter panels. Then he created custom pop out quarter windows just like on the two door. He even added a 2 door gas filler door. again wanting the final product to look like it was factory made. Several hundred hours went into building this one of a kind. custom Datsun. And it shows. The metal work is top notch and when you look at the door sills. B pillars and quarter panels. they look like how Datsun would have made them. If you were to pay a fabricator to do metal work comparable to this today it would cost over $8000 at $40 per hour shop rates. And custom fabricator hourly rates are usually much higher then this. Once Tim had completed this car. his dream had been realized and as it happens with many custom car builders. it was time for him to move on to his next project. So Tim sold the car to a local Datsun enthusiast who owned and enjoyed the car for 20 years. When the car showed up for sale 3 years ago. I had to have it. When I got the car. it was in a major state of dis-assembly. The previous owner had enjoyed the car for many years and it had gotten a few bumps and scratches so he had taken it apart and had it painted but then got busy with life and the car sat in storage for around 5 years. He had installed a fiberglass front end and was going to add some custom items like electric door poppers and an alarm system but never got back to it. Sold to me as a project. I had the car transported from the west coast. I got the car running again and I replaced the misfit fiberglass front parts with new metal. I installed two brand new NOS factory fenders. an NOS front valance and a clean. solid hood. All metal. I also installed a brand new NOS set of euro front turn signal light assemblies. The car did not have a back seat when I got it so I bought a nice clean stock wagon back seat and installed it. I also installed new carpeting. < As you can see. the car still needs some work to make it show worthy again. Mainly a paint job. finishing the wiring and some tuning. The car runs and drives. It could use some tuning of the SU carbs and the battery needs to be charged up or replaced. It requires a jump start now. It drives smooth and straight. shifts through the gears good. the clutch feels strong and the brakes stop it well. The wiring is not all hooked up and needs to be gone through. The lights. horn. wipers. gauges. etc. need to be hooked up and are not currently working. Things needed to be done. Hook up the wiring. Tune Carbs. Fix slow leak in left front tire. Replace windshield (it has a crack in it). Slight exhaust leak where the manifold meets the down pipe. Finishing hooking up the door poppers. The Good: Solid and Rust Free All Metal Body. Brand new NOS front sheet metal. All primed and ready for paint. The body is near ready for paint. Dynamat has been applied to the entire interior including inside the doors. quarter panels. hatch. etc. Dash is in beautiful shape. Pad is nice and nothing is missing or broken. Rare White Needle Gauge Assembly with Factory Tachometer. Momo Race Steering Wheel. Momo pedals and Momo leather shift knob Coil over suspension front and rear Rare Datsun 280ZX 15" x 6" Snowflake wheels with near new tires. Custom Battery Box under rear seat with custom cover and Odessey battery and billet mount Custom one piece front and rear bumpers. All the seams and holes welded. Upgraded Datsun Retractable Seat Belts No missing parts to hunt down. Body: Solid and Rust Free all Metal Body. The body is very straight and clean and the paint on the main body is nice and shiny. The doors and rear hatch have had some body work to shave the door handles and the rear tag light and vents. The front fenders are Brand New NOS factory fenders primed on both sides. Brand New NOS Front Lower Valance primed on both sides. Nice clean straight hood There is no rust or rot in this body including solid floors. quarters. rockers. etc. The body is near ready for paint. Interior: The car has a custom interior with matching updated seats and interior panels in a 2 tone black and grey cloth. A custom headliner too. Nice crack free and un-faded Dash with Factory Tachometer. Momo Race Steering Wheel Momo Pedals Momo Leather Shift Knob Dynamat sound insulation installed throughout the interior New Carpet Kit Custom Battery Box under nice clean factory black back seat Drivetrain. Suspension and Brakes: The engine is a L20B with dual SU side draft carburetors. It has the electronic distributor. A dogleg 5 speed transmission An SSS style 4 into 2 into 1 exhaust manifold along with the custom 2" exhaust with a stainless steel muffler complete the exhaust system. A coil over suspension front and rear. The rear leaf springs were re-arched and lowering blocks were added to give the car its stance. An aftermarket front sway bar was added too. The struts and brakes have also been upgraded and stop the car well. I am well known in the Datsun community and I own several Datsuns including 2 other 510s and have always had at least one 510 since 1987. It seems that I have too many projects and as I get older. I have come to realize that I will never get to them all. So I have decided to sell off a few of my cars. I hate to sell them but it is better to pass them along to other enthusiasts then to have them sit and not be enjoyed.
