1967 GSS DART (Tribute Car)
The Dart started out as a very clean 6 cylinder car before being transformed into a big block GSS Dart (this is not an original GSS Dart). The car was built for the movie "Adrenaline" as a very rare 440 GSS Dart with a Max Wedge top end. The milestone car was inspired by Mr. Norms "GSS" high performance Darts from early 1967.
The vehicle was purchased as a 6 cylinder driving car in very good condition. This car is by no means a show car and has some imperfections. The paint looks good but by no means is it show quality and was on the vehicle when purchased (please review pics). It is a very nice car loaded with great parts and is listed well below what has been invested. The car was stripped of the drivetrain and suspension. The rear springs were relocated and new Mopar superstock springs were installed. The factory wheel tubs were widened to the frame rails retaining the factory appearance. Subframe connectors were installed and the driver and passenger floorboards were repaired where there was some rust present. They were then coated with Eastwood encapsulator and painted. The front suspension has been replaced with a 73 A-Body K-member with the spool engine mount design and idler arm support. Just suspensions supplied the Moog balljoints, bushings, heavy duty tie rod sleeves, tierods, pitman, and idler arms. Magnumforce tubular upper control arms (providing more positive caster), Competition Engineering front drag shocks and Wilwood 11' Disc brakes finish off the front end. Sitting between the framerails on Schumacher engine mounts and an adj. torque strap is a 1968 440 with steel crank, Eagle rods, and Ross flat top pistons (11.2:1 compression). The engine features a pair of 440 Source Aluminum heads milled .060 (74cc chambers) with Comp cams double springs, 10 degree retainers installed with Cometic MLS .086 head gaskets and ARP 12pt headbolts. A Competition Cams solid lifter cam .550 Int .570 Ex, 256/266 duration @.050 108LC and a double roller timing chain. 440 Source 1.5 ratio aluminum roller rockers and pushrods finish off the valve train. Oil is supplied by a new A-body 6 quart oil pan and Melling High volume oil pump. An A&A 440 crossram, linkage, and chrome Max Wedge aircleaners with K&N filters and two Holley 450 cfm carbs with Quick Fuel metering plates. A Holley HP electric pump supplies the fuel from a brand new gas tank customized with a deep fuel sump. An MSD 6A Digital (Black) ignition, MSD Billet Distributor (Black Cap), MSD chrome coil, MSD (Black) 8mm plugwires and Autolite Platinum plugs provide the spark. A Denso single wire alternator provides the juice to the Optima battery mounted in the trunk with 00 battery cable providing the cranking amps to the Mopar Performance mini starter. A Milodon aluminum waterpump and Mancini aluminum housing pump the coolant through a Griffin Aluminum Radiator and Flex-a-lite Electric fan which keeps the engine cool. Hooker 2" ceramic silver coated fenderwell headers feed into a 3" exhaust with X cross pipe through Walker Hemi Turbo mufflers exiting out Stainless tips. A 727 Transmission with a TCI 3500 stall converter, Turbo action reverse pattern manual valvebody, Mopar deep trans pan cooled by a B&M cooler. The shifting is done with a Turbo action shifter custom fit into the factory center console. A narrowed Dana 60 with a Strange trac-loc, 35 spline axles and 4.10 gears finished off with Wilwood 11â€rear discs and Competition Engineering rear drag shocks complete the rear suspension. Mickey Thompson P325/50R15 28 x 13.5 ET Street Radial tires mounted on Weld Draglite 10X15's get the power to the pavement. The interior features new Legendary custom made front and rear seat covers. Year One provided the dashcap, rear package tray, headliner and a new front bumper. The classic walnut steering wheel from Grant keeps the tires between the lines and the Autometer Phantom tach and gauges round off the instrumentation. Classic tunes provided by Retrosound RT thumbwheel radio with modern Bluetooth and USB and power antenna. JL Audio front speakers and Powerwedge 10" powered subwoofer.
GSS History
This was the first small "compact car" with the big motor (built by Dodge in 1967) - An actual, original GSS Dart is an incredible find and is so rare, that most Mopar enthusiasts have never seen one - These first GTS cars in 1967 are even more rare and most books do not even list the GTS until 1968 - They are more rare than Hemi 'Cudas and Charger Daytona's - It was the legendary Mr. Norm who first put the big block High Performance 383 HP motor into the narrow engine bay of the lighter and better handling A-Body Darts, with upgrades to the frame and suspension- When the 383 HP motors, with nearly 400 "Real" Horsepower and a massive 425 foot pounds of torque, were put into these lighter great handling Darts, they instantly became Americas hot new "compact" muscle car - One of the forces that most affected the muscle car era was the pressure regularly applied to the factories by their dealers, who did not hesitate to take customers' demands directly to corporate marketing management. Norm Kraus's Grand-Spaulding Dodge of Chicago was already the place to buy a Dodge when owner Norm Kraus cut a deal with Chrysler to build a run of the 1967 Darts equipped with the 383 big-block, beating Plymouth to the market as they had planned to use it exclusively in the Barracuda. When the issue of badging arose, Mr. Norm came up with an elegant and interesting two-part solution. First he substituted the "T" in the cars' "GTS" designation with another "Sâ€, signifying the GSS (Grand Spaulding Special) model. Mr. Norm called these first High Performance Darts Mr. Norms "GSS Darts", and they were sold exclusively at his Grand Spaulding Dodge dealership- Their domination on the street and strip received instant acclaim, and they flew out of his showroom - The bosses at Chrysler saw the demand and the excitement created by these cars, and quickly tooled up and built the first run of 229 High Performance big block four speed Darts in mid-1967, ahead of the scheduled introduction of the GTS model for 1968 -The Darts were a sales success, so for 1968 Kraus requested a special run of 50 Dodge Darts with the 440-cubic inch 375-horsepower Magnum engine (425 true horsepower). Since the Dart was already set up for the big block, installing the 440 was an easy proposition, and a run of 50 cars would also qualify them for NHRA Super Stock. Chrysler pulled fifty cars from the assembly line and sent them to Hurst-Campbell for conversion as they had done with the Hemi Darts. Each was serialized with an "M" code in the VIN, equipped with the 440 and an A727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission, and then shipped to Grand Spaulding. And while the "383" badges were no longer accurate, there was no version of a "440" marker that would fit intheir place, so they were left on all the cars. Misleading? Not in the legal sense, since the 440 GSS Dart was advertised as such. But out on the street, more than one victim was left in the dust of what he presumed to be a lesser car.
