1968 Mustang California Special. Automatic. ordered as C code 289. A great driver with a few cosmetic issues. Runs great and handles well with no mechanicl issues. Originally had Parchment interior. converted to Red. 2. 79 rear gear ratio. does great on highways. Marti report included. 289 (which I believe is a factory 302 as it was ordered after Ford started replacing 289s with 302s) has an aluminum Edelbrock manifold with a brand new Holley 600 4 barrel with electric choke. Starts and runs perfect with no oil burn and good compression all around. The paint shines up great but there are a few issues. Right door in front has rust and cracked paint (see photo) Left door in front looks like it had a bad quality repair for a little rust. Right C pillar area has a spot where the body work was poor before paint applied (see photo) It is hard to see in photo. but some people might not notice it in person as well. Otherwise just a few very small nicks. Interior is really good all around. but not show quality. because of nicks and scratches and such. Headliner is great. Speedo cable needs replacing (I have new one) Rear tailights function but blinkers and stop lights just barely get brighter. I have checked grounding. not sure how to improve them. I do have a new rear wiring harness not yet installed. It adds the dynamite sticks and has sequential blinkers. but I am not convinced that will fix it. Voltage in the car is strong. so it’s beyond my skills to fix. Again they work. just not as good as my 66 Mustang. It makes you a little nervous driving at night. that’s all. The rear windows stay shut well. but need work to roll up and down properly. The car is missing it’s original drivers door tag. I think it was in an accident prior to my ownership. and the tag was never replaced. as another door was sourced. Also as seen in photos. the front grille is a non California Special grille. So over the years a few things went missing. The GT gas cap is not original. and the GT Quad exhaust wasn’t original. I have a new proper rear valence to tuck the quad exhaust in as well. GT center caps were added. Underneath is driver quality dirty. however. the floors and such look very solid with no sign of rust. Overall this is a great car. I drive it a lot with no worries. It’s reliable and runs great. It is the perfect car to enjoy and drive and tinker on. And watch grow in value. Or would make a solid choice for total restoration.
