Ford entered into the intermediate size muscle car category when they built the Ford Torino to compete with other midsize muscle cars from other manufacturers. The Torino is named after the city in Italy that was considered the Detroit of Italy for car manufacturing. It should be noted that in the late sixties the Torino was considered a mid-size car; today it would be considered a full size car.
