The 1957 Ford Fairlane was the first year of Ford’s featured fins. Former United States Secretary of Defense, obert McNamara is credited with implementing this design feature. The fins on the 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 are a unique design feature characteristic of that era of American automobiles. The front end, ear end and dashboard of this model are very similar to the 1957 Ford Thunderbird. The 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 is featured in several films because of its unique design appeal. These films include “Pyscho”, n which Janet Leigh drives one throughout most of the film and the final scene is of the rear end of the ’57 Ford being pulled with a chain out of the swamp and Janet is in the trunk! A black 1957 Ford Fairlane is also part of a car chase scene in “Goldfinger”. It chases Bond who is driving his Aston Martin DB4 and the Ford is in turn followed by a mysterious motorcycle which fires a rocket propelled grenade at the Ford, nding the car chase. In the classic drive-in feature, Thunder Road”, ritten, roduced by and starring Robert Mitchum, he climax of the film is a car chase with two 1957 Ford Fairlanes. While the cars are side by side, itchum flicks his cigarette butt down the shirt collar of the bad guy who subsequently rolls his car off the road and it bursts into flames.

This model is also featured very prominently in the Clint Eastwood/Kevin Costner classic, A Perfect World”. Costner kidnaps a young kid who becomes his partner and they steal a 1957 Ford four door sedan. At one point, ostner gets into a demolition derby with police officers whose ’58 and ’59 model Ford Fairlanes disintegrate when Costner’s ’57 smashes into them.

This car model has a unique place in American auto history and American film history.
