Description for Ford Thunderbird 1966
1966 Thunderbird convertible, orrect Q code 428 engine with C-6 transmission, ptional Roadster Tonneau. I have personally driven this car 40,000 trouble free miles on numerous VMCCA tours. The engine has 40,000 miles since major overhaul. Bored .030 oversize, rank turned .010, ll new parts installed with hardened valve seats for unleaded fuel. Edelbrock carburetor, ertronix ignition. Oil consumption averages 2500 miles per quart. It runs well on 87 octane where we live at 4500 feet elevation. At lower elevations it need 90-91 octane.Transmission complete overhaul by professional shop in business for 40 years. All wear parts replaced, hift kit and new torque convertor, ew trans. cooler lines from radiator to trans. Radiator re-cored with new transmission cooler.
Front suspension rebuilt with USA made parts. Rear leaf springs replaced with all new bushings and shackles. Drive line universal joints replaced and balanced along with differential pinion assembly. Exhaust system all new from "H" pipe back. New tires installed in 2014, pproximately 600 miles.
The body is very sound and rust free. During restoration, had the interior and trunk areas completely bare down to the floors and found no trace of rust. There is no sign of rust underneath and nearly all of the original factory undercoating is still intact. I have not tried to make the underside look new with spray-on undercoat as I have seen on many other cars. I made one small repair on the R/H rear lower quarter panel on some minor damage using a weld-in panel about 6 in by 18in.
When I purchased the car it had been repainted and the color changed to Samoan Coral. They used Dupont Imron which is a very durable polyurethane, When I did the repaint in 2014, found the Imron so solid I decided to not strip it. I block sanded the entire body by hand to assure a good straight surface.I then finished it with PPG base coat and clear coat, olor sanded and buffed to achieve a nice smooth flat finish. Both bumpers are re-chromed and all stainless polished.
The interior has been redone using pre-sewn kits from Thunderbird Headquarters, including new seat foam. The door panels were replaced with new, etter materials from the same source. Door weatherstrip is new. Tonneau vinyl is new All new liners in trunk area.
The top is older but still in excellent condition and does not leak. When I did the top all of the structure was disassembled, ead blasted, ainted, e-bushed and correctly adjusted. All pivot pins and hardware were re-chromed. New weatherstrip is installed throughout. The windshield is new with new rubber mounting.
Over time, have made some modifications for reliability. The top relay module was replaced with a system of modern heavy duty relays with much tighter connections and excess wiring removed. The flip panel motor was replaced with a heavy duty Lincoln motor, he gearbox was cleaned and re-lubed. New weatherstrip throughout. The turn signal relay assembly was replaced with a solid state assembly.
The brake system was split and dual master cylinder installed.
The original AC compressor was replaced with a new Sanden type compressor along with a new receiver (chemical dryer). Serviced with Red Tech 12.
Everything works correctly except the clock (NOS replacement) which works sometimes. The AM radio is intermittent (I suspect poor antenna connection).
In 2009 this car was driven on a VMCCA tour to the top of Pikes Peak in Colorado (14000 feet)
with no issues.
I have spent a lot of time and money on this car, ut have found it to be all worthwhile as we have driven and enjoyed it for a number of years and trouble free tours.
Due to advancing age and storage concerns, t is time to reduce my collection.
My reserve price is set well below what many others are asking. You will not find a nicer Thunderbird for twice the price.
