This car is a mostly un-restored original classic and an original Z-code T-Bird with the 390 CID V-8. It was one of the few American produced automobiles to offer a steering column that slides left or right to ease vehicle ingress and egress.
Made in Wixom, Michigan on March 24, 1964, this car was shipped to the Newark, New Jersey area, (DSO code 15).
Presented in Florentine Green, it was one of a handful of Thunderbird-only colors and only available from the factory in 1964. The original paint is in decent shape, with only minor blemishes visible on close examination. The body panels are straight and the front and rear chrome bumpers fit well and finish is good. The front grille is in very good condition showing only minor signs of wear. The contrasting black vinyl power top is in good shape. The headlights with bezels and taillights are in very condition with no hazing or cracks and the taillights and reverse lamps are in similar condition. This Thunderbird has an attractive period correct presence with this one year-only color.
Inside, the original gold vinyl bucket seats look good, as do the carpet, dashboard, two-spoke steering wheel, door panels, mirrors, center console and shifter. The gold door panels complement the seats and dashboard and are designed to mirror the mid-century modern cabin motif. The factory carpet is complete and complements the rest of the interior. Driver assist features are power steering, power brakes and power windows and power seat. The gauges are displayed properly and function as designed. The factory AM radio completes the interior.
This Thunderbird is equipped with a rarely seen Z-code 300-horsepower 390 CID V-8 engine, fed by a Ford four-barrel carburetor The power is transferred to the rear wheels by a Cruise-O-Matic three-speed automatic transmission with a 3:00-1 ratio rear differential. Factory dual exhausts, Lemans wide whitewall tires surrounding 15-inch original steel wheels with full Thunderbird wheel covers, spinner caps and exterior matching rear fender skirts, complete the look.
For 1964, the Thunderbird was restyled in favor of a more squared-off appearance, which became known as the Squarebird, and was most evident when viewing the car from the side or rear. As in previous years, the new Thunderbird continued to be offered in hardtop, convertible and Landau versions. Thunderbirds created a market niche that eventually grew and became known as the personal luxury car segment.
Competing vehicles to this Thunderbird in 1964 include the Chevrolet Corvette Convertible, Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu convertible, the Aston Martin DB5 Convertible, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider Veloce, the Austin-Healey 3000 Mark III Sports Convertible and the Mercedes-Benz 230 SL convertible.
