Description for Ford F-250 1976
This truck is a 76 Ford F250 4x4. It runs great. My father was almost done converting it to diesel when he took ill, and he has since died. I don’t know all there is to know about the truck, but I’ll tell you everything I do know, the good, the bad and the ugly. Please don’t hesitate to contact me here with questions, concerns, etc. I’ll be happy to find out anything I can that I may not have thought to list here.
Like I said, Dad was in the process of converting it. The hard part is done, and by that I mean the engine and transmission are installed. There are some little things he didn’t get to though, please see below. In no particular order:
The engine is a 1990 Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel. It has somewhere in the neighborhood of 180,000 miles.

Automatic transmission (which is aftermarket—the truck used to be a stick). It used to have a gear shift on the floor, now it’s on the steering column.
The truck is geared low. My father planned to add more gears. I have some parts which I believe are those very gears, but I’m not sure. The box just says “quality differential components” by Yukon Gear and Axle. It drives like a champ, but I haven’t pushed it more than around 55mph. I’m sure it would be fine, but since the truck doesn’t have a tachometer, and I’m not sure what this particular engine should sound like, I haven’t wanted to push it.
Because the transmission was changed both the speedometer and the odometer need to be calibrated.
The 4 wheel drive works, but you have to lock the hubs manually.
Brakes work well, but I have no idea how old they are.
The dash lights need to be hooked up, or may just need a fuse, I’m not certain which.
The stereo turns on, but apparently the speakers also need to be hooked up. It’s an older detachable face Pioneer CD player/radio. There is also a Sirius radio dock that is probably 6 or 7 years old. I have no idea if it works or not. There is a Sirius antenna as well.
All the blinkers, head lights, tail lights, back up lights work.
The wipers work, but probably need blades.
Back up warning signal works.
The truck had only one owner, until I inherited it.
The truck has around 240,000 miles. The engine has around 180,000 miles.
It has never been wrecked, however someone backed into one of the cabinet doors while it was open. That door still opens, but it needs a little help with a screwdriver. It does still close and lock correctly.
The other 5 cabinet doors all open, close and lock correctly.
There is quite a bit of rust on the bed, just surface rust on the cab.
The cab doors also open, close and lock correctly.
The side and back windows are intact. There is a crack in the windsheld.
There is no rearview mirror, but you wouldn’t be able to see out of it anyway what with the headache rack and the air compressor
The side mirrors are fine. Both sides have the large rectangular mirrors and the small, round convex mirrors.
I assume the air compressor works, although I don’t even know how to turn it on to check. Yes, it is included with the truck.
I can’t decide how well the fuel gauge is working. When the tank is full, it says ¾ of a tank, but the needle does fall as I use fuel. I’m too paranoid about running out of gas to find out exactly how far the needle will fall.
There are 2 fuel tanks, but the auxiliary tank needs a new fuel line, so I just use the main tank.
Since the odometer doesn’t work, I can’t figure the exact fuel millage. However, when I drove it home from my Dad’s I got somewhere around 17 mpg.
The upholstery is fairly reasonable for 40 year old upholstery. That said, it’s kind of beat up. It’s blue, if that matters at all.
You may want to add some sound proofing. The engine purrs, but it purrs loudly.
There are some various parts that are included with the truck. There are a couple fuel filters and the box that is labeled differential parts, and some other parts and pieces. There are also two books that I believe my Dad was referencing: MOTOR’s “Auto Engine Tune up and Electronics Manual, 1990, the professional service trade edition”, by Chrysler Motors Ford Motor Company and a service manual labled 789Truck, 9ZC Manual Form SENR3420.
There are also 3 metal tool boxes in the bed that are included with the truck.
The tires are middle of the road. The tread looks good, and they hold air, but they are certainly not brand new. There is a good spare and a large lug wrench. If there’s a jack I haven’t seen it, but it may be in one of the tool boxes.
The battery is about 2 months old.
The gas cap is about 2 weeks old. Whoops J
The truck is being sold as-is.
