1959 Ford Galaxie Convertible Description1959 Ford Fairlane 500 Galaxie Sunliner Convertible
Tennessee car for most of its life 332 CID V-8 engine with a Holley four-barrel carburetor Automatic transmission and 2.69 rear end Torch Red (code R) and Colonial White exterior with red and white original interior Functional power white convertible soft top Select-Aire factory air conditioning Power steering1959 was one of the more notable years for styling with the American automotive manufacturers and Ford was certainly in the mix when the redesigned the Fairlane for 1959. MotoeXotica Classic Cars is proud to present this 1959 Ford Fairlane 500 Galaxie Sunliner Convertible. At the time of its original build, the Fairlane 500 Galaxie Sunliner was the most popular convertible in the world. Redesigned with much more squared up lines, a bigger windshield, “gullwing” headlamp brows, and a “Flying V” back panel cradling large round taillamps.
A full-size car built from 1959 through 1974, the Ford Galaxie was used for the top models in Ford’s full-size range from 1958 until 1961, in a marketing attempt to appeal to the excitement surrounding the Space Race.
This example was built in Ford’s Atlanta, Georgia (A in the VIN) assembly plant on June 11, 1959 and was shipped to the Phoenix, Arizona area. Its two-tone Torch Red and Colonial White exterior is in good condition while its trim is in fair shape. The windshield and side glass is in good order, as are the vehicle’s lights, clear and crack-free. The car rides on 215/70R14 tires mounted on factor steel wheels with original hubcaps. This droptop’s body panels are straight and its bumpers are in good shape. Extras on this convertible include Ford’s Select-Aire air conditioning and an external spotlight on the driver’s side. Please note that the factory air conditioning is incomplete but compressor and other ac components are included with the sale.
This car left the factory with a 332 CID V-8, automatic transmission and a 2.69 rear end. The original two-tone red-and-white seats are in good order, as is the car’s red carpet. Its red metal instrument panel with its chrome trim is in very good condition and the huge, deep dish, three-spoke steering wheel are in good condition. The door panels are in fair order while the shifter is in good order. Completing the interior is a factory AM radio.
The 1959 Ford range was introduced in late 1958 with the Fairlane 500 as the top trim level. During the 1959 model year, the Galaxie was added to the range as an additional trim level, assuming the top position from the Fairlane 500. The Galaxie was offered with the same sedan and hardtop body styles as the Fairlane 500 while the Sunliner and Skyliner convertibles moved across from the Fairlane 500 range. Styling varied from the Fairlane 500 with the addition of a Ford Thunderbird-style C-pillar on all but the Sunliner.
Although a separate series from the Fairlane 500, 1959 Galaxie models carried both Fairlane 500 and Galaxie badging. In keeping with the era, the 1959 Galaxie was a chrome and stainless steel-bedecked, two-tone colored vehicle. Ford advertised “safety anchorage” for the front seats. The parking brake was now a pedal. Seat belts, a padded dashboard and childproof rear door locks were optional, while a deep-dished steering wheel and double-door locks were standard. Currently the horn is inoperable.
A new top-level full-sized model was introduced at mid-year 1959, the Ford Galaxie. The 1959 Galaxie displayed both “Fairlane 500” and “Galaxie” badging.
Competition to this Ford in 1959 included Chevrolet’s Impala Convertible, Mercury’s Monterey Convertible and Buick’s LeSabre Convertible.
