Description for Ford Other 1949

Your not going to find a cooler running driving car for less money! This is one of the funnest projects we have had at Rotten Leonard's Jalopy Shop for awhile! The car started as a pretty rust free running and driving 49' Ford 2 door Sedan. We gutted it out and pitched all of the interior. We formed repair panels for the two small rust areas in the floor boardsand seamedthem in. this made for a very solid rust free main body. next we braced up the body and removed the top and all window mechanisms, followed by cutting out the package tray and moving it forward from the trunk 10" to provide better proportions. This left a large gap where we formed a filler panel and grafted it into the body. Next the window channelswere filled and the garnish moldings were reshaped and in-letted in permanently. The wing windows were shortened to fit the refinished windshield frame, and the bodywork and paint was performed to blend in with the awesome patina this car has going for it. We pulled the hood and punched it full of old school louvers to give it the just the right look. The whole car was lowered 4" to give it the perfect stance. We tried several front bumper configurations and kept coming back to "It just looks killer without one!" so that's what it got. As for the interior we wanted something that would wear great and be water resistant should someone get cought up in a rain storm meanwhile be clean enough that your best girl won't mid being in there in her nice dress. The vinyl on the seats and door panels is heat seamed pleats meaning there are no stitching holes to let water in, also after the floor pan repair it was covered in rust converter and then outdoor rated carpet was glued down WITHOUT jute padding so should it get wet it will dry up quickly. Now this isn't high dollar interior rather something that is a little cheaper and can be used without cringing every timeyour kids be kids..... in the trunk I had some extra carpet so I put it in there loosely, it isn't great looking but makes it so you have a clean place to put your stuff. you may chose to re-do it or not, its functional but not show quality.
While it was in the shop we rebuilt the brake master cylinder, Replaced all 4 wheel cylinders, replaced the brake shoes all around, machined the drums and repacked the wheel bearings. Then all of the lights were repaired with new bulb sockets. The car drove into the shop and runs pretty decent, but I don't know any history on the motor, the oil is where the oil should be and the coolant is where the coolant should be and it doesn't overheat on grades so I don't believe it has any cracks that can sometimesplague these old flatties. The transmission shifts nicely and the clutch doesn't chatter rather engages quite smoothly. Valves have the normal tick of a correctly adjusted flathead no loud valves just the light ticking like a sewing machine. The wiring is original but has not been hacked up. we did replace the harness for the rear lights as it used to go threw the roof.
Body wise, the main body is very solid even the spare tire well is solid. There is some rust in the bottom of the drivers door skin and there is some rust in the back bottom of both front fenders, very typical of these models. the rest of the body has signs of dents that have been pulled and there are some dents along the bottom rocker panels (which are very solid inside and out, no rust) and drivers rear quarter panel. This car would be awesomeleft as is but would defiantlybe worthy of a complete restoration. We view this car as a great running driving project car with the heavy lifting already done. Perfect for someone who wants to make week night upgrades and go enjoy it on the weekends this summer. These cars are getting hard to find in this solid of condition, and original drop tops are getting to be out of reach for most people, here you get the same look for a third of the cost!
I put up a build thread on the Jalopy Journal, you can google "The 49' Ford Roadster Project" and see what went into this build. might give you a better idea of what you are purchasing.
