Description for Ford Mustang 1972

Testing thewaters on our rare 1972 Mach 1 Q code with original 351 Cleveland 4V Cobra Jet engine! The vehicle has 76,000 original miles.
The car underwent a $18,000 restoration in 1996 with 70K on the odometer. We have most of the records for the build and a large stack of receipts to date. Since the restoration,the vehicle has only accumulated 6,000 additional miles. The car has been in a garage or storage unit the whole time, and is onlydriven on nice days. No rain or snow here.
This car has been in the family for about 20 years and belonged to my Father In Law (RIP) who was a Ford retiree. He purchased the car in the late 90's in Las Vegas where he maintained a winter home.He purchased the vehiclefrom amember of the Mustang Club of Las Vegas who was responsible for the restoration a few years prior. We also have the records showing the prior owner wasin Las Vegasin the Henderson County area. Paperwork suggests the vehicle was a baked solid body and drivetrain in need of a restoration. The vehicle was originally sold in Los Angeles dealer region as well, which helps explain why the body is so clean and rust free on thisvehicle.
You will notice Ohio historic plates in the photos. My Father In Law brought the car back to Ohio about 10 years ago so he could drive it in the summer here which is much more mild than Las Vegas!
The vehicle was professionally appraised by Classic & Collectible Cars of Las Vegas at the time of purchase for insurance reasons. The car was rated a "2" as aVery Good quality restoration across the board from all Mechanical & Cosmetic features. This record is included.
The vehicle features the original 351 4V Cobra Jet engine (Q Code) which was arare option for the 1972 model year. The engine was removed during the restoration, repainted, and the top end was rebuilt.This Cobra Jet block features the 4 Bolt Main design which can handle a lot morepower and is more durable for power applications which historicallyhas beenadesirableblock to use forMustang builds and by collectors.You will notice in the pictures that the original 4V carb has been replaced with an aftermarket Edelbrock Performer, and the air intake has been replaced with a Shelby Cobra one. We do not have the original carb or air cleaner box. Engine runs great and theincreased power response is evident in the throttle.
Anothermain difference that was changed as part of the restoration is that the car was originally Silver.The owner really wanted a white car so he chose to paint the car Performance White (Dupont B9444) which was widely used by Ford across several vehicle linesin 1996.Also there is no matteblack finish on the hood. My opinion is that this is a drastic improvement inthe right direction.The paint quality is much better than original and has a nice gloss / enamel look to it. There is no fading or dullness you would see on the factory finishes of the time.
The glass on the car is perfect. Original Carlite side windows and rear windshield in excellent shape. No swirl marks, distortion, fog, or spider marks.

Since the restoration there has been other minor maintenance on the vehicle including;

It is important to note that this vehicle is not in perfect condition. Ithas both reproduction parts as well as a few aftermarket ones.There are several minor blemishes, paint chips, scratches, etc. Depending on who you are, the vehicle is either an 8/10 or 9/10 in every category. Consider this vehicle as aready and willing driver. This car is meant to be enjoyed as is, however if you wanted to address any of these items it would be pretty easy to get it perfect.
The undercarriage is very clean on this vehicle, there is no rust issues on the frame.It does not appear any evidence of body filler was used as part of the restoration before repainting. I have put a magnet all along thelower bodyaround the vehicle and doors and there are nodead spots.On theupper window channels on the front doors there is some inconsistency in thepaint finish in the channel so they may have tried to correct something there, I can't be 100%. I reviewed this with a couple Ford employee's/ retiree's who are Mustang guys and they said it looks normal to them with no issue.
This site is limiting the amount of pictures we can post to 24, so I did not include photos of the small blemishes. Let me know if you need to see these and I can email specific photos if needed.
Here are the list of the main imperfections I have noted.
1. There isone very small area on the fastback above the rear window with a few paint bubbles less than 1MM in size.You cannot see them unless you are directly over it. My guess is thatthis is due to the paint processand either moisture or contamination was trapped in the paint. Not in a corner or seal area.
2. There is apea size bubble on thedriver's side rear corner panel near the wheel well.Same situation as above, I thinkthe surface area was not properlysanded or cleaned prior to paint.
3. Frontrocker areas just behind wheel wells hassome rock spraywithsmall paint chips and scratches on both sides, very minor.
4. Rear honeycombis warpedon right sideof plastic and faded. This is most likely the original part..
5. Front Window chrome trim has scratches and pitting. Front Windshield is new with rubber but the original trim was reused. It is solid but has visual wear.
6. Steering Wheel Chrome Horn Cover is missing a screw so will fall off occasionally. Can be repaired.
7. Verified AC works, but may need to be recharged.
8. Transmission Shifter Assembly could use new bushings, there is some play side to side when putting in gear.
Additional Internet info on Q-code Engine (Cobra-Jet)

The Q-code "351 Cobra Jet" version was produced from May 1971 through the 1974 model year. It was a lower-compression design that included open-chamber 4V heads. The open-chamber heads exhibited superior emissions characteristics and were required to meet the more stringent emissions standards for 1972 and beyond. The "351 Cobra Jet" high-performance engine that included a different intake manifold, high-lift, long-duration camshaft with hydraulic valve lifters, different valve springs and dampers, a 750-CFM spread-bore 4300-D Motorcraft carburetor, dual-point distributor (with four-speed manual transmissions only), and four-bolt main bearing caps. These engines also featured induction-hardened exhaust seats for use with low-lead and unleaded gasoline. This engine was different from the 1970-71 M-code 351C having a more aggressive camshaft, a spread-bore carburetor, a four-bolt block and the lower compression allowed regular fuel to be used. It was rated at 280bhp (209kW; 284PS) for all 1971 applications. For the 1972 model year, the only change to the engine was a retarding the camshaft events by 4°. The engine was rated at 266hp (198kW) (SAE net) for 1972 when installed in the Mustang, and 248hp (185kW) in the Torino and Montego

I have been a Ebay member for a very long time and have only had positive experiences with this website and community until this year. I have bought and sold multiple vehicles and expensive items without any issues. Earlier this year I sold an vintage concert shirt ($15) andthe person who bidrefused to pay for the item he won. Heactually asked me to lower the price on the item seeing how he"helped" get a high price on other shirts I sold at that timethat he bid on (but did not win).
