Description for Ford Mustang 1964

64½ Mustang collector car in beautiful rare original condition

There are two things that make this car extra rare.

  • It is one of the oldest Mustangs.

  • It is in like new unmodified condition.

  • PLEASE READ ALL BELOW BEFORE BIDDING.

A 64 ½ Mustang in beautiful rare original condition with a build date of 04-23-1964, just 6-days after they went on sale. (Official introduction 04-17-1964.) The 260-V8 engine and the 3 speed Cruise-O-Matic auto-transmission both are excellent. This car is in beautiful condition. No surprise rust under the trunk mat, for example. Inside is like new.

This is one of the estimated 4% of the older Mustangs that is unchanged. The early mustangs first appear the same as a 1965, but they are different in 115 ways. Originally a mustang body on a modified Falcon frame, the changes were made gradually over four-months.

It has the original engine, transmission, Eaton power steering pump, single chamber master cylinder, generator, large horn, original working radio, and more. ALL WORK PERFECTLY. The color is the original Wimbleton white with the factory installed black vinyl top. The inside is black with the original center console. Recently the transmission gasket was replaced, the horn rebuilt, muffler installed, the carburetor was rebuilt, the gas tank replaced, and the power steering arm and power steering pump were rebuilt and a new battery ($311 for a reproduction) was installed, and one seat was reupholstered. The hood has been replaced and several minor body repairs were made before I purchased the car. The paint has been redone and is about 99%. All parts replaced on this car are correct for early '64 models. This car came from the factory with the '65 hood, what Ford called the "improved hood" and headlight bezel, as were the Pace and promotional Mustangs. It is correct on this car as verified by Ford records of the VIN number.

Not a defect, but the exhaust pipe is rusty and possibly original, although it is solid and does not leak. One photo shows this along with the original factory undercoating, which while it does not look slick, it has protected the car for 53 yrs.

From Colin Date's Mustang Restorer's Guide. "I have found that one of biggest stumbling blocks is finding a car that is stock in appearance and content. Finding a car that is in stock original condition (whether it's a genuine survivor or a meticulously restored example) is a rare occurrence. The number modified is staggering." Most cars considered original have various chrome parts installed, special wheels or other items that make them not truly original.

The mileage is a very low 98,894 actual.

This classic Mustang can be seen at my home, which is in Indiana near the bridges to downtown Louisville, KY.

Included are the original owner's manual, a full car cover as in picture, original jack, spare tire, books & repair manuals and numerous small items. Also included is a good extra battery, of the required bottom lip type (24R - no longer made). The battery and box are normally changed but this is original.

A check of the NADA classic car values (07-18-2017) shows this year car at $34,600 for high retail and $22,500 for average retail. I believe this car's condition would be at high retail, as per the explanation by the NADA. To describe it as average would be ridiculous. My reserve is a huge amount below a fair value.
