If you've got the need for speed, this is an offering that will go from the trailer to the track. In an era when late-model designs dominated drag racing, a 1966 Mustang, like this one, is a unique statement for the owner and a popular design with fans, one that will turn both heads and the trap timers. Moreover, this gorgeous machine is professionally built and set up for sprinting in an 1/8-mile. Painted in a red-and-gold combination with lettering that recalls the legendary Hertz Shelby GT350H rental-car program from the same year, exterior changes on this fastback include a Pro-type hood scoop and shaved door handles. Fiberglass parts like the hood and front fenders, plus Plexiglas windows, help to bring the weight down. Under the hood is a 429 CI FE-based competition engine that is rated at 800 HP. This FoMoCo bullet includes a Holley Dominator-type 4-barrel carburetor that is fed by braided-steel lines atop Trick Flow aluminum heads and a matching high-rise-design intake manifold. Ready for the bracket wars, a delay box capable of reading up to 10,000 RPM has been installed, with an MSD Pro Power coil kicking spark to the engine thanks to dual Optima batteries in the trunk. A 2-speed Powerglide with a Quarter Pro shifter also helps it blast off, assisted by chromed wheelie bars to keep it under control. Cooling is ably accomplished with a modern aluminum radiator and fan, while braking upgrades include front discs and a Simpson parachute; a roll cage has been installed for safety. Inside are a custom dash layout with modern gauging, a large-face tach with shift-light and convenient above-head toggles. Finally, lightweight polished-aluminum 5-spoke wheels complete the look, with Goodyear Eagle narrow front rubber and wide rear slicks touching the pavement. Sold on a bill of sale, this fabulous Ford is ready for enjoyment and victory.
