We first saw this Mustang in the 90's and were very intrigued by the option content. After owning well over 1,000 Mustangs this one remains the only original sunroof car we have seen.
We have owned other ASC (American Sunroof Company) cars including Mercurys and even Mopars, but no Mustangs. Documenting these cars is extremely difficult due to the top being installed after the car is produced. It will appear on Ford's original invoicing but after an extensive investigation those docs are not available for this car according to Marti Autoworks.
According to Coachbuilt.com, Ford was working to make the tops more available. A quote from their website reads 'American also installed an unknown number of sunroofs on regular (Cougar) XR7s and a small number of roofs were supposedly installed on Mustangs, although documentation is lacking.'
There are several pieces to this puzzle. First, this car was ordered as part of a 'Fleet' order which isn't typical. This car carries an odd DSO of 721452 which is for a special Paint or Tire order. This car was painted in Ascot Gray Metallic, which still shows in the trunk and jams.
Hertz is well known to have specified these tops for their rental cars in this market, offering them as an upscale car. Add in the custom Lincoln color and the clues indicate this was quite possibly a Hertz unit.
The car itself is of course cosmetically challenged. The car was repainted in a candy apple red some time a very long time ago. Prep was started for a repaint some time ago and the project stalled. The body itself is quite solid. In the door, trunk and engine bay jams the Ascot Gray Metallic is still visible and even shiny. The factory vinyl top was partially removed but the factory moldings are still in place. This car deserves a restoration quality repaint.
Inside the interior has been treated to some new front seat upholstery, carpet and door panels. It presents well but will need a new headliner.
The power top mechanism still works sending the top forward and back properly.
Under the hood, the Numbers Matching 289 runs excellent. The C4 transmission appears to also be the original.
Being equipped with Factory Power Steering and Power Front Disc Brakes makes this car enjoyable for drivers of all experience levels. Braking is confident and consistent, steering is easy and predictable. The brake booster was just rebuilt and installed just after the photos were taken.
The wheels are factory Ford Styled Steel Wheels and correct for 1968. The fit excellent and give the car a GT look.
This is a very unique car in the Mustang world. If you want to be the 'Only One' at pretty much any car show, check this one out!
