Description for Ford Mustang 1964

For Sale The 1964 HF II Design Center Prototype Mustang Convertible.

This Ford Mustang Prototype is part of Ford History and "Rare" is an understatement.

This Mustang is a Home Office "Special Order" build number DSO # 842510.

Scheduled Build date May 25th 1964.

Vin # 5F08D153027 is a 1964 Ford Mustang Convertible assembled on the assembly line in Dearborn Michigan USA. This Mustang was Pulled off the assembly line without an interior. This Mustang was than sent to Ford Design Center and received a custom handcrafted leather interior with prototype parts and appointments and construction, one off special exterior paint color and single pinstripe. Door tag denotes this car as a DSO # 842510. Home Office Special Order.

This is the only 1964-5 Mustang convertible produced in this manner and to say its "RARE" is an understatement, especially when you consider Henry Ford II ordered it to be built. This Car is a part of Ford Motor Company history and the documentation is very interesting. Given as a gift to a close family friend from New York.

The Home Office designated this car as a 1964 and it is registered as such.

I was working in my shop one day in 2003 and a restomoder came by with the 1964 HF II prototype Convertible looking for an upholsterer to replace the leather interior with a blue and white pony interior. Upon inspection I realised that this was no regular Ford Mustang. I persuadedthe owner not to continue with the plans to restomod this car. I sent him away with the knowledgethat this is was a very special Mustang and to go out, call the magazines and Ford to find out what he has. Fortunately oneyear later I purchased it when the restmoder came back to me with intention of selling the Mustang. We agreed on a price and since this time in late 2003 I have been the custodian of this piece of Ford History. I have done my best to retain the originality and integrity of the work and build of the Design Center craftsmen. I did repaint it and I repainted the engine and compartment. I photographed everything and was careful to retain the originality. This was an easy car to refinish and did not have any real body damage. I sanded it and the original paint is under this paint job. It has a great gloss and shows beautifully. In my efforts to get all the information I have been from Southampton NY to Mirage Arizona. Dearborn Michigan to Seattle Washington. Flushing Meadows Queens NY (Worlds Fair site) to Charlotte North Carolina.I have interviewed Ford designers, stamping plant managers and Design Center employees retired and currently working. Spoken with Ford Motor Company archives and historians, friends of the Ford Family and even Edsel Ford II. I has been great discovering all the details on how cars like this came into being. I have spoken with many of the great men and women in the Mustang industry and I "THANK" them all for the help and support in my research. Ford history does not always come easy.

This is the Facebook page for the car with many more pictures of this car from all of the events it has been involved in with Ford Motor Company. Stories about people I have met and the fantastic history of Ford Motor Company and the United States of America!

On top of what I have discovered, that this 1964 Ford Mustang was built as a one off Design Center Prototype for Henry Ford II outfitted and optioned the way he ordered it, I have been lucky enough to discover that this Mustang DSO # 842510 has "Numerical Siblings" in Prototype GT 350 Shelbys and Preproduction Worlds Fair cars! This fact is proven out by the door data plate tag. I have spoken to the owners of the two prototype Shelbys great guys! I even was able speak to the owner of the existing 1964 Worlds Fair car ! Very nice lady Mrs Mansell. That car is in the photos

Furthermore this Mustang for sale is the convertible model of 3 special 1964 Manufacture Ford Mustangs that were tweaked by the Design Studio for Henry Ford II . Basically "One of each body style". These cars earned prototype parts, leather interiors, special options and special paint jobs in the process. What I found is that the Design Center produced a coupe, a convertible and a fastback. These cars were produced and constructed to please the "Boss". These cars were EXPENSIVE to build and Ford spent a considerable amount of money making this car happen. There was quite a bit of secrecy surrounding these cars when being modified and as each one was modified it was in a locked room at the Design Center and left the Design Center under wraps! Additionally I would like to point out the car for sale here is the first Mustang off the assembly line to be outfitted with prototype parts and interior for HF II. The fact that it survived at all and to be in this condition is amazing!

Henry II had three Mustangscustomized by the Design Centerin 1964.

All three are considered "Prototypes" as they were Design Center styling exercises executed to please "The Duce". As you can see there were one of each body style. Each one extremely rare. Each one with a different approach concerning the build. The secondary purpose was toguage the viability of cost / practicality of new future interior options.
