Description for Ford C800 1954
I'm the third owner. This was purchased and primarily maintained by the Topeka KS Fire Department. It underwent a major transformation in the late 1970's when the fire department converted it from a pump truck to a jaws of life support truck. At that point they disassembled the entire truck and did a frame off restoration, converting the truck from Red to Yellow. Everything was painted or restored. They replaced the OHV Lincoln engine with a modern (at the time) 361 FE ford engine. They outfitted it with a new Reading utility bed and generator system to power jaws of life tools.I purchased the truck in 2013. At that time it was in the hands of the second owner (owned since 1992). He never drove it. I got it to fire up. I replaced points and condenser along with all other necessities. The truck runs great and drives. I put brand new Cooper NOS (Made in USA) tires on it 3 years ago. I still have 2 more tires that go with the truck. I kept the original wheels and had new retainer rings made for the split rims. I also had to replace a front wheel cylinder. Again, its powered by a 361 FE engine and has a 4 speed manual transmission, power brakes. Lights work, turn signals work, horn works, flashing rear emergency lights work intermittently. Wipers work slowly. Spotlights worked the last time I tried them. I also just put a brand new $200.00 AGM battery in it. I had the radiator professional recored (still the original). I redid the heater control valve and installed a new thermostat as well. I also had the carburetor rebuilt. Clean and clear MO Title. 23kGVW so it is UNDER CDL by federal standards. Will do about 65mph down the highway.
As of right now the truck runs and drives well. No significant corrosion on or under this truck. The only spot is on the hood which can easily be repaired and some minor amount of bubbling that literally just started this year in the cab corners. When the Topeka FD painted this truck in the 1970's, they literally painted everything... frame, springs, axles, drums, everything.
3 years ago I wanted to do something special for my kids but not hack up the truck. So I found an old 1950's playground slide and grafted it into the truck. People love it!!!! If you want a head turner, you'll find nothing better for the money. It's a neat old truck.... but I just can't bear to cut it up to make it what I really want. I know the slide isn't everyone's style, so I will remove it if you desire.
I have the Topeka Fire department history on the truck which is also really cool. It might seem like a lot of money, but it's one of a kind and a real time capsule. If you want to know more about the truck call me -OR- look it up on YouTube. Just do a search for Roamin Rich Big Job. You can also find me at Fb at Roamin Rich
