Description for Ford Falcon 1963
When the executives at Ford set about to configure the Falcon, they envisioned an attractive, relatively compact car that would serve as a bold alternative to the prevailing large and increasingly expensive cars of the time. They could have had no idea that, some 55 years later, an example of their work like this 1963 Ford Falcon Futura would greet the present day with its awesome vintage early '60s look very much intact while still benefiting from some very tasteful and well-applied modifications along the way. No doubt, they would have approved, enthusiastically.
A vibrant red color replaces the Corinthian White this Falcon left its Atlanta factory with, giving it a vitality no doubt exceeding that of its original incarnation. It's a great shade, adding a custom, modern touch to the car but not distracting from the lines and ornamentation that helped make the Falcon such a success in its time - a success that left its competing Big Three counterparts scrambling for a few years to find a fitting response, as the American car buying public consistently showed its preference for the Falcon over their offerings for some time. Complimenting its striking shade of red, the chrome trim on all four sides is in consistently good form - from the bumper and grille with its extensive horizontal ribbing and wedge shape trim on the hood up front, to the lengthy stretches of trim on its sides, all the way back to the rear trim and bumper. Those additional expanses of chrome above the side windows, also in great condition, create the appearance that the roof is actually floating just above, prompting Ford to coin the term "illusion hardtop" for the styling cue.
Open the door, climb inside and you'll see a truly impressive interior, still sporting its original red, but featuring a number of great touches. A pair of really comfortable and well-contoured bucket seats straddle a great-looking custom center console in place of the original bench seat, flanked by door panels restored to a "factory plus" condition. Those seats not only add a more modern appearance to the interior, they're power-operated as well. Just beyond the woodgrain steering wheel, you'll see a meticulously restored dash area - an expanse of clean trim against a bright red backdrop housing an instrument cluster that remains in original configuration and looks every bit as clean as when it began service. To more thoroughly monitor your motoring functions, a trio of aftermarket gauges sit to the lower left, while the under-dash climate control system sits at the center, just below the original AM radio. The trunk area in back is surprisingly spacious and tidy - there's plenty of space for luggage to rest on the stretch of still-fresh carpeting that lines the floor.
While Ford chose to emphasize the thriftiness and practicality of the Falcon when it was first released, a 302 cubic inch V8 now sits in the engine compartment to offer vastly improved performance, equipped with a mild cam to give it a little extra power. It starts right up and runs smooth, with a nice, appealing exhaust note voiced out through the dual exhaust. A Cobra dress kit has been added to up the visual impact when you raise the hood. The engine is paired with a C4 three speed transmission that's known for providing reliable service. This early '60s Ford classic sits on a set of 17" Foose wheels, wrapped with Hankook Ventus radials.
