Description for Ford Country Squire 1972
1972 Ford Country Squire 10 passenger station wagon with a 400 cubic inch V8 (all original) and new (less than 1,000 miles) C6 automatic from Performance Automatic. This car has been my daily driver and has been comfortable and reliable (after addressing transmission and cooling challenges). I have commuted in this car in the dead of winter (great heater) and the heat of the summer (AC works great). The car can sit in traffic in 100 degree (F) heat with the AC blowing and not overheat, while cranking the tunes or talking hands free through the stereo all while still charging the battery. The car drives great on the highway with no shaking or vibrations.
The Good:New brakes front and rear, new master cylinder, and new shocks. The A/C system is all new (except for the evaporator) and runs R134A. There is a Flex-A-Lite aluminum radiator and electric fans, Earl's fluid coolers for Power Steering and Transmission fluids. The car has a 200A Powermaster alternator with a custom fuse sub-panel (4 constant and 7 switched circuits), and an MSD high torque starter. The engine has stock exhaust manifolds leading to a custom mandrel bent fully welded 2.5 inch true dual exhaust with x-pipe and Cherry Bomb Pro mufflers (sounds great). The wagon rides on Ridler 20 inch wheels with Continental 245/40R20 Performance All Season tires. There is dynamat (actually Eastwood) sound damping and a new carpet with double thick jute backing. The stereo is a RetroSound fully digital unit with Bluetooth and hands free phone compatibility. There are Polk Audio speakers throughout with 6 1/4 in woofers and 1 3/4 tweeters with crossovers in the front with 6 by 9 three way speakers in the back (in boxes as they were too big to mount in the wing panels). The metal decking in the back was sand blasted and painted with Eastwood ceramic chassis paint. There is a custom center console with cup holder (i can't make it to work with out my coffee) and Autometer gauges. The temperature gauge (on the right) is controlled by a rotary switch which will display the following temperatures (one at a time of course), engine coolant, radiator return, engine oil, transmission cooler supply and return and outside air.
I drew up wiring diagrams for all the changes I made to the electrical system (which are minimal, but also show all the new wiring added), and have all the factory wiring diagrams and factory service manuals, owners manual, build sheet (from under the front seat) and original registration for the car.
The Bad:Not great on gas (and I run it on premium). The springs in the driver seat are getting weak. Needs front suspension bushings and an alignment (tires look good, just a small amount of cupping). The carb has become finicky in the rain (particularly if it is both hot and raining). It runs well and starts up great in anything but the rain (it hasn't always been like this, and I have been tweaking the carb a little bit at a time to walk it back into perfect tune slowly).
The Ugly:The spare tire well has rusted out (still holds the spare though) and there is rust in the rear inner wheel wells. Some rust repair in the rocker behind the driver side rear door (by previous owner). There is virtually no rust forward of the rear doors, with all the rust below the car (it was washed regularly, just not the underside). The paint is tired (but is approaching a nice rat rod like patina if you are in to that).
This vehicle is for sale locally and I will end the auction if it sells locally.
